Black Tops Red!!!
DAVIS, Calif., Feb. 20 (Reuters) FC Sudwerk's 2nd annual intra-club  match on Sunday proved to be another classic, as Black outlasted Red 14-10 in a fiercely contested battle.

"This is as good as it gets," said Juan Carlos, FC Sudwerk's president and CEO. "These two squads gave it all they had. This is a club with lots of heart, and it showed today."

The game began at a furious pace, with the Black Bombers taking a quick lead. But the Dirty Little Secrets -- despite playing without three of their stars -- answered back, tying the game at three apiece on terrific goals by Craig Dandurand, Adam Bauer and Cathy Ross.

The opening action was so intense it prompted the center referee to chant "Sudwerk, Sudwerk!" and then minutes later to caution players to calm down. Black goalie Andrew LaMar shot back: "Hey, this is serious. This is for club bragging rights!"

After the initial fireworks, Black took control of the game, building a 9-3 first half lead, thanks to the deadly passing-scoring duo or J.B. Rudell and Joe Schmidt. LaMar lived up to his "Happy Feet" nickname, making so many ill-advised runs onto offense it led Rudell to scold "Andy, get back in goal!"

In the half's waning minutes, Red goalie Dandurand turned his ankle and limped off the field. But, in testimony to the spirit of this grudge match, Dandurand wrapped it and returned to the pitch for the second half.

The DL Secrets rebounded after the break, with Bauer, Phil Pareas, Amy Toy and Ross tearing open the Bombers' defense. Playing with only one sub, Red narrowed the margin to 11-9 before fatigue set in and Black closed the deal.

The Bombers benefitted from solid goaltending from Joe Cardoza in the second half and the energy of Morgan King and Renae Wurschmidt Owens.

Afterwards, the club gathered at Sudwerk Restaurant and Brewery for a round of beers. Here were the best two lines:

--Dandurand to Black players: "How come you don't pass that well when we play outdoor!"

--Bauer to all: "I'm having a barbecue at my house after our first game this spring because I'm tired of waiting on J.C."

(P.S. J.C., being in Europe is a pretty good excuse, but you never want to miss having beer with this group! And as for Adam, with an attitude like that, he's definitely in danger of being named team captain -- don't you think.)

Game balls to everyone. Prost! ##
