| FC Sudwerk Press Release Sudwerk Presents Year-end Awards DAVIS, Calif., Dec. 31 -- FC Sudwerk announced the winners of its first annual club excellence awards on Tuesday, with striker John Acord collecting two trophies as top scorer and best single-game performer. Acord led the team by scoring 23 goals in the summer and fall DARSL seasons, beating the 14 tallied by Kevin Khalaf in spring. Known for his speed and deadly left foot, Acord also delivered the best single-game result by notching a club-record six goals in Sudwerk's 10-2 romp over Purple Haze on Aug. 28. "John demonstrated he's a dangerous and effective offensive force," said Ramal Werdna, president and CEO of FC Sudwerk. "He's a finisher who lives up to the billing." Five of the seven "Red-And-Black Excellence In 2002" award are determined by club fans who visited the team's Web site to vote. The "top scorer" award goes to whoever tallies the most goals over the year, and club manager Ramal Werdna selected the winners of the prestigious "most graceful under pressure" award. Other recipients were: --Patrick Chandler, for top defender of the year. "Patrick uses the perfect combination of brute force and technical skill to intimidate opponents and secure the ball," Werdna said. --Joe Cardoza, for most reliable player. Cardoza, the oldest player on the team at 50, played in 38 of Sudwerk's 39 games over 2002's four seasons. The only game Cardoza missed was to attend his daughter's birthday party. --Andreas Agocs, for best contribution to FCSudwerk.com. Agocs wrote the remarkable Aug. 9 article titled "Allegations of FC Sudwerk Move Denied." The piece delved deep inside the club's controversial finances and potential sale to the German beermaker St. Pauli Girl. --David Raybould, for most inspirational player. The 48-year-old Englishman battled nagging injuries but still managed to display elegant playing style and intelligent, defensive precision when on the pitch. --Chris Lief and Joncarlo Mark, for uncommon grace under pressure. Lief and Mark traded off goalkeeping duties in a year that tested them mercilessly. "Chris and J.C. showed true grit," Wedna said. "They withstood barrage after barrage of shots and never gave up or complained." Sudwerk, the Northern California superclub that blasted onto the world soccer scene in 2001, will play an informal, small-sided indoor season at the Davis Athletic Club's Goalgetters venue over the winter before returning to outdoor competition in the spring. ## |
