| Andre Press Sports Ticker Davis United Exacts Its Revenge By Joseph Hunter AP Soccer Writer DAVIS,Calif., Dec. 11 -- FC Sudwerk closed out the fall regular season with a disappointing 5-1 loss to first-place Davis United on Tuesday. The defeat ended Sudwerk's unbeaten streak at four, a run that lifted the club out of the cellar and gave it new life after starting the season 0-3. Sudwerk, which fell to 2-4-2, will face River Plate next Tuesday in the first round of the playoffs. The winner will advance to the championship game, to be held later on the same night. Davis United, eager to avenge its 2-0 shutout loss to Sudwerk three weeks ago, wasted little time Tuesday getting on the scoreboard. Just minutes into the match, Peter DiFalco beat Sudwerk defender Andrew LaMar on the right flank and blasted a shot into the lower righthand side of the goal from just outside the penalty area. United followed up minutes later with a goal from Randy Martinez, who collected a rebound in the penalty area and slid it by Sudwerk goalie Chris Lief. The red-and-black came out flat and never recovered. The club displayed uncharacteristically poor defense and an uninspired offensive attack that produced few scoring opportunities. United scored its third and final goal of the first half off a free kick five yards to the right of the penalty area. Matt Amaral launched a rocket through a three-man wall and into goal. Sudwerk, which failed to exhibit the aggressive dominance it has in recent weeks, scored its only goal midway through the second half when Patrick Chandler banked a blistering shot in off the left goal post from 12 yards out. United's final two tallies came from an own goal by Lief, who had trouble controlling a ball and mistakenly sent it into the net, and a lob into an empty goal when Lief came forward to assist the attack in the game's final 2 minutes. "We're terribly disappointed with the loss to United," said Ramal Werdna, the president and CEO of FC Sudwerk. "I have to hand it to them, they completely outplayed us and deserved to win, but this is not the way we wanted to finish out the season." "Now the challenge," Werdna added, "is to put this behind us and rebound for the playoffs. We know we can beat any team in the league when we're at our best." In other league action, Fearless forfeited 1-0 to River Plate. In next week's playoffs, second-place River Plate will play Sudwerk and Davis United will square off against Fearless. River Plate, 4-2-2, beat Sudwerk in the season opener but tied the team in two subsequent meetings. ## |
