Sudwerk, H. Grown Battle to Draw

DAVIS, Calif., Oct. 8, 2006 (Reuters) -- It doesn't get much better than this -- playing an evenly matched soccer game on a spectacular autumn day -- and that's exactly what FC Sudwerk and Humboldt Grown did on Sunday, drawing 3-3.

The two sides kicked off shortly after 10 on a crisp, sunny morning with the temperature near 70. What a day! Both teams scored early, but the red-and-black took a 2-1 lead late in the half when FC Sudwerk birthday girl Alinia Asmundson played a terrific through ball to charging striker Adam Bauer, who finished it nicely.

Humboldt Grown rallied, though, scoring twice early in the second half. Sudwerk eventually responded, netting the equalizer in the 75th minute on an odd play. David Bowman sent a low cross into the box from the left flank that slipped through a crowd and somehow trickled into the back of the net.

Minutes later, Alinia Asmundson almost got the game winner, when she smacked a rebound from eight yards out that forced Humboldt Grown goalie Debbie Daniels to make a diving save.

Great game everybody! Kudos especially to Roman Suvada and Fred Tahan, who held the back line steady, and to Mel Meyer and James Engel for a strong return to the lineup. And Alinia, I hope the rest of your birthday was as impressive as the game you played. Prost!

FC Sudwerk's next match is 2 p.m. Sunday against Pulsars.##
