FC Sudwerk Sets Fall Roster

DAVIS, Calif., Oct. 9 (AP) -- Completing its roster for the fall 2001 season, FC Sudwerk has signed magnificent midfielder Armando Murrieta, prolific goal-scorer Jeremy Millstone and two other all-stars as reserves, club officials announced on Tuesday.

Millstone, acquired from Newcastle United, and Murrieta, transferred from the legendary CF Barcelona, joined the team last week. As backups, the club also added injured striker Balta Silva from Inter Milan and midfielder Taylor Roche from AS Monaco.

Ramal Werdna, president and CEO of FC Sudwerk, said the team is ready for the fall campaign.

"We couldn't be more pleased with our lineup," Werdna said. "We've accomplished our preseason goal of signing a cadre of top international talent to lead FC Sudwerk's quest for a championship."

The four players join a squad rich with skill and experience. Also on the team are Andreas Agocs from Borussia Dortmund, Hans Hemann from Bayern Munich, Chris Lief from the Glasgow Rangers, Rob Baker from PSV Eindoven, Joncarlo Mark from Lazio, Joe Cardoza from Juventas, Patrick Chandler from Arsenal and Andrew LaMar from Real Madrid.

Werdna said finalizing the roster for the new super-club proved challenging given FC Sudwerk's limited resources.

"All we have to offer are jerseys and beer," Werdna said. "Many of these players could fetch much higher salaries in other parts of the world. But the attraction of the best ale made in Northern California can't be underestimated!"

The regular season begins Oct. 16 and concludes on Dec. 4, with playoffs ensuing Dec. 11 and 18.
