Streak broken at 49

DAVIS, Calif., Oct. 30 (AP) -- FC Sudwerk's incredible run of fielding a competitive side for every scheduled game ended on Wednesday, after 53 weeks, when it could muster only five players for a league match with Cosmos.

Sudwerk came up two shy of meeting the seven-player minimum required for a Davis Adult Recreational Soccer League (DARSL) sanctioned game.

"Obviously we're disappointed that the club's longest, most-revered streak has ended," said Ramal Werdna, the club president and CEO. "I know a lot of players have made a lot of sacrifices over the last year to keep this team going."

The game was the first forfeit in club history, which has spanned 13 months, five seasons and 50 games.

Sudwerk has struggled with its roster this fall, partly due to injuries and partly to a widely fluctuating schedule that can have it playing any one of three different nights each week.

Wednesday nights have proved especially difficult for the team.

"We're going to finish out the season the best we can and regroup in the winter," Werdna said. "It's been a long year, and I think we're overdue for a break and some reorganization."
