Poor Start Bedevils Sudwerk for Second Week

DAVIS, Calif., Oct. 31 -- First half defensive breakdowns cost FC Sudwerk for the second straight week, as the club fell 6-2 to Davis United on Tuesday night.

The loss drops Sudwerk to 0-2 in league play, with six games remaining in the DASL Fall 2001 regular season.

Davis United, a team of free agents led by former UC Davis standout Matt Amaral, received three goals from Randy Martinez and two from Amaral. United took advantage of poor marking early on, scoring all six of their goals in the first half and most from close range.

Sudwerk showed more offensive luster than it did a week ago and received goals from Armando Murrieta and Andreas Agocs. The team benefitted from the flair of its latest addition, striker Bruce Berry, and dominated much of the second half but could not make up the deficit.

In both of its losses, Sudwerk has started poorly and rallied strongly in the second half.

"Guys, next week, let's play two second halves," forward Joncarlo Mark told his Sudwerk teammates after walking off the pitch.

Sudwerk is scheduled to play Fearless, the league's other winless team, at 8 p.m. next Tuesday. Fearless, also 0-2, lost 7-3 Tuesday night to first-place River Plate, which coasted to victory with three goals from Rolando Hernandez, the league's goal-scoring leader with six overall.

Ramal Werdna, the president and CEO of FC Sudwerk, said he's encouraged by the club's improved play.

"We're laying the foundation for a team that can pass well, play intelligently and compete for the championship by the season's end," Werdna said.
