| Andre Press Sports Ticker Sudwerk Suffers Crushing Defeat in Season Opener By Bryant Maxwell AP Soccer Writer DAVIS, Calif., Oct. 24 -- FC Sudwerk suffered a crushing 7-0 defeat in its season opener Tuesday night, after giving up six goals in the first half to talented River Plate. The loss puts Sudwerk in last place after the first week of the DISC Adult Soccer League's (DASL) fall season. River Plate, led by Rolando Hernandez's three goals and two assists, claimed first place with the offensive outburst. "They're obviously a skillful and seasoned team," said Ramal Werdna, the president and CEO of FC Sudwerk. "We're a new club and I know we'll improve as the players become more familiar with one another." Sudwerk stepped up its attack in the second half and Andreas Agocs, Andrew LaMar and Hans Hemann each had scoring opportunites while Armando Murrieta displayed deft ball control and playmaking in midfield. In addition, Sudwerk's defense clamped down and allowed only one goal. The second half gives the club something positive to build upon, Werdna said. The team's objective, he said, is to improve steadily and peak for the playoffs. "River Plate has set the standard. We know the road to the championship leads through them," Werdna said. Meanwhile, in other league action Tuesday night, Davis United defeated Fearless 3-1. United, a club of free agents, received goals from Matt Amaral, Randy Martinez and Robert Zaretsky. Sudwerk will face Davis United next Tuesday. Game time is scheduled for 8:45 p.m. ## |
