| Andre Press Sports Ticker Sudwerk Striker out for the Season DAVIS, Calif., Oct. 17 (AP) -- In a devastating preseason blow, FC Sudwerk lost its star goal-scoring forward Jeremy Millstone to injury Tuesday night, when he ruptured an Achilles tendon during an exhibition match. "I'm out for the season," a despondent Millstone said Wednesday morning. "I have surgery on Friday." Millstone, acquired from Newcastle United, had trained with the team for three weeks and impressed club officials with his skill and poise. Ramal Werdna, the club President and CEO, said FC Sudwerk has an impossible task in trying to replace him. "Jeremy had become the central focus of our forward attack, and we knew he would dazzle opponents and fans with his goal-scoring prowess," Werdna said. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jeremy, and we hope he has a full and speedy recovery from this terrible injury." The loss clouds the club's prospects for winning a championship in the fall season set to begin Oct. 23, said Enotsllim Ymerej, editor of the weekly online magazine World Soccer North America. "With Millstone, there's no doubt FC Sudwerk was a championship contender," Ymerej said. "Now, everyone will wait and see what the club can do before making any predictions." Millstone got off to a great start Tuesday night in FC Sudwerk's final preseason game at the Davis Indoor Sports Center. He passed and controlled the ball well and set up several scoring opportunities. After going for one contested ball, however, Millstone fell to the surface and clutched his lower leg. Millstone, who had to be helped from the field, got the prognosis at an area hosptial two hours later. "They said I tore my Achilles tendon," Millstone said. "I have to have surgery. That's the only way to repair it." You can e-mail your condolences to Jeremy at [email protected]. ## |
