| Andre Press Sports Ticker Sudwerk Crushed by Davis United By Bryant Maxwell AP Soccer Writer DAVIS, Calif. Jan. 22 -- The second week of winter season dealt a devastating blow to FC Sudwerk, which lost its star playmaker Armando Murrieta to injury on the way to a 9-0 drubbing from Davis United. Murrieta, who had to be carried from the field, sprained his right knee and is expected to be on the disabled list for two weeks. Team physician Dave Raybould, who gave Murrieta a preliminary exam, said the 18-year-old midfielder strained his knee but did not appear to incur any ligament damage. "I think he'll be alright," Raybould said. That's the second injury to hit the club in four days. On Saturday, defender Andrew LaMar also hurt his right knee. He didn't play Tuesday night and is considered doubtful for next week's match. Meanwhile, Sudwerk suffered its worst defeat in team history. The club came out flat in the first half and found itself trailing 3-0 at the break. In the second half, United sliced up Sudwerk's defense for another six goals. "Some nights you're on and some nights you're off," said Ramal Werdna, the club's president and CEO. "That's about all there is to it." The game represented the exact opposite of last week's season opener, when Sudwerk romped over Julie's Coeds 13-0. Sudwerk dropped to 1-1-0 in the winter season and fell from first to third place. The red-and-black is scheduled to face River Plate at 8:45 p.m. next Tuesday. In other league action Tuesday night, Big Pern's Posse beat Julie's Coeds 2-1 to move into second place. Woodland won 1-0 by forfeit over River Plate. ## |
