Sudwerk Blasts Off Into Winter Season

DAVIS, Calif., Jan. 16 -- FC Sudwerk opened its winter season in spectacular fashion Tuesday night by blasting the expansion team Julie's Coeds 13-0.

Sudwerk, which took possession of first place with the offensive explosion, bombarded Coeds' goal with a club-record 42 shots and led 7-0 at halftime. The game represented the team's most lopsided victory ever, outdoing the 10-0 thrashing of River Plate in the fall league playoffs.

Never threatened, the red-and-black began the scoring only 30 seconds into the match when the team's newest acquistion, striker Ralph Garcia, slammed a shot into the goal. Garcia also netted the club's second goal just 2 minutes later.

Sudwerk's goal-scoring sheet never looked denser, with Garcia tallying 3, Bruce Berry 3, Joncarlo Mark 2, Patrick Chandler 2 and Armando Murrieta, Andrew LaMar and Andreas Agocs each 1.

"This was a nice way to start the season, but we know the competition will get a lot tougher in future weeks," said Ramal Werdna, president and CEO of FC Sudwerk.

Sudwerk's defense held Julie's Coeds to 7 shots on goal. Joe Cardoza and Mark split goaltending duty to record a joint shutout.

The biggest threat to the shutout came when Murrieta sent an errant, looping back pass to Cardoza, who executed an amazing, leaping save to prevent an own goal.

Sudwerk will square off next week against Davis United in a rematch of last fall's championship game. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. Tuesday.

United, which defeated Sudwerk 1-0 in the fall league final, beat Woodland 5-0 on Tuesday night to claim second place after the first week of winter season play.

In the other league matchup, Big Pern's Posse won by forfeit 1-0 over River Plate.

The winter season runs through March 5, with playoffs held on March 12. For more information on the league's schedule, standings and stats, visit www.davisindoor.net.
