Zócalo and Catedral

Esta ubicada enfrente del   Zócalo (plaza principal ) construida en el Siglo XVI,  pero su aspecto ha variado mucho debido a una serie de reconstrucciones que se realizaron para corregir los daños  causados por  temblores. Sin embargo, conserva su belleza de la cantera verde que se observa en casi todos los edificios de la Ciudad y en la fachada aún conserva un precioso relieve esculpido en cantera que representa a la Virgen Maria y a la santísima Trinidad (copia de la pintura Italiana realizada por el maestro Titian)

Zocalo and Cathedral

The Cathedral, reconstructed in several ocations, was originally built in the 16th Century with plae-green  stones like a number of public buildings here.  It faces a small square adjointing the Zocalo and boasts a carved replica of a Virgin of the Assumption painting by the Italian master Titian in high relief over its main portal.

Teatro Macedonio Alcalá

Esq. Av. Independencia. Teatro de principios de siglo construido en el estilo Francés (de moda de esa época) originalmente también tenía un casino anexo.

Macedonio Alcalá Theater

On the corner of Av. Independencia. This theater was built at the beginning of the 20th century in the French style that was in fashion at that time. It originally had a Casino as well.

Plaza de la Danza e Iglesia de la Soledad

Ubicada entre Av. Morelos y Av. Independencia, conforma un área muy interesante formada  por la  Iglesia de la Soledad, el  Palacio Municipal y la escuela de Bellas Artes. Se recomienda sentarse a probar las nieves oaxaqueñas.

La fachada de la  Iglesia de la Soledad es el mejor ejemplo del trabajo detallado  en cantera. El pequeño museo contiene una colección muy curiosa de arte religioso popular (milagros)

Dance Square and Soledad Church

Between Av. Morelos & Av. Independencia. The Soledad Church is by this square. Here you can admire the Municipal town hall and the fine art school. We recommend to sit down and taste the famous Oaxacan ice creams.

The façade of this church is the best example of the detailed work done in quarry stone (cantera). The small museum contains an interesting popular religious art collection (miracles).

On Alcalá st.#202.  Is one of the most beautiful buildings of Oaxaca. You´ll find works of Toledo, Tamayo and Morales and other modern painters from Oaxaca.

Casa de Benito Juárez

García Vigil #609 Contiene algunos muebles y artículos personales de Don Benito Juárez,presidente de México que luchó contra Maximiliano de Hasburgo y expidió las leyes de Reforma

Benito Juarez´s House:

García Vigil #609. Contains some pieces of furniture and personal articles that belonged to Benito Juárez. The president who fought against Maximilian of Hasburg.

Instituto de Artes Gráficas de Oaxaca

Alcalá #507. Contiene la colección de obra gráfica y la biblioteca donada por el pintor Francisco Toledo al pueblo de Oaxaca. La casa colonial es digna de visitarse. En el segundo patio podrá disfrutar de un buen café.

Alcala st. #507 ( in front of Sto. Domingo church) Contains Toledo´s collection of graphic Art and the library donated by him to the people of Oaxaca. You can enjoy a good coffee in the second patio.

Centro Cultural Santo Domingo

Exconvento de Sto. Domingo del siglo XVI considerado una de las obras arquitectónicas y artísiticas más importantes de la Nueva España. Recientemente restaurado ahí encontrarán el museo de las culturas de Oaxaca, La Biblioteca Fray Francisco Burgoa, el jardín Etnobotánico de Oaxaca y el Museo del sitio.

El templo constituye uno de los más importantes ejemplos del Barroco en México. El altar  principal fue restaurado en 1956. La capilla del Rosario en el interior es maravillosa.

Santo Domingo Cultural Center

Exconvent of Sto. Domingo, 16th Century, Considered to be one of the most important architectural and artistic works in New Spain. Recently restored. There you will find Prehispanic pieces of zapotec & Mixtec cultures, treasures of tomb 7 of Monte Alban, the Fray Francisco Burgoa Library and the ethnobotanic garden of Oaxaca.

The church is one of the finest and most lavish baroque churches in Mexico restored this century in 1956. The rosary chapel is a jewel.
