On-target Jiggle thwart Purple power

Jiggle entered the run-in tonight looking to continue the recent improved form with a winning performance against fellow strugglers Purple A's. Three points would after a lean opening five games make it a useful seven points out of twelve, and lift Jiggle off the foot of the table. Chris Laker, a product of one of the UK's finest journalistic establishments, the University of Lincoln was on hand to provide this week's account of the action...

Fine strikes from Stu MacPherson and Sam Cohen gave Jiggle their second win of the Summer Fives 2004 campaign.

Just one change was made from the side that drew with Ifield Eagles last week, Cohen returning Tango-Man like, to replace Dave Carling in attack.

Jiggle began brightly and continued to show their improved form of late, with a Chris Laker throw carving out an early chance for MacPherson to fire wide. A neat move involving all players then saw Dave Leake feed MacPherson, whose effort was deflected onto the post by the goalkeeper and away for a corner.

Jiggle were dominating their opponents but needed a goal to settle the side down. However, despite good openings for Cohen and MacPherson, the shooting boots failed to fire in a goalless first-half.

The second period began in much the same vein with the Jigglers hassling A's and creating numerous useful goalscoring chances. The key was to maintain the standard of play and to remain patient when in front of goal.

This focus was rewarded midway through the half as they finally grabbed the goal their approach work had deserved. Picking the ball up in midfield, MacPherson held off his marker to slip the ball to Leake, who clipped through for MacPherson to shoot confidently into the far corner.

Purple A's enjoyed a spell of possession, but it was left to Cohen to seal matters when, with the last kick of the game and with most of the A's defenders around him, he turned on a sixpence, worked his way around the pitch, before firing in.

The perfect end to a thoroughly entertaining Jiggle performance, and one that they will need to keep up for next week's clash with Freestylers.
