It has been a summer of two halves for Jiggle so far. Promising tournament form reaped a last sixteen spot at the Twin Oaks Cup and an unbeaten record in a tough group at the Atticus Cup last Sunday. The Summer Fives has been a different story with three defeats out of three. The 'Group of Death' has proved deadly so far but everyone has expressed the view that with the ability in the current squad we can and must do better. Tonight would be a test just as tough as any of this opening month with 2nd placed TSC Rangers looking to build on their 100% record at Jiggle's expense. Let the drama unfold...
TSC Rangers 1 FC Jiggle 0
TSC racked up their fourth win out of four as a goal late in the second-half ensured Jiggle remain in the bottom two. Jiggle once again showed plenty of spirit, bags of committment and good organisation but came away with nothing to show for the effort. Ultimately TSC kept the ball better and while Jiggle had three excellent opportunities on the counter-attack it was the second-placed side who eventually made their possession count. Jiggle made two changes to the side that faced Samba Stars, David Leake and Dave Carling returning in place of Stu MacPherson and Sam Cohen respectively. Phil Williamson partnered Dave C in attack while Chris Laker lined up alongside Dave L. There was an added incentive for Jiggle to do well tonight with Dave L's brother in law in the TSC side. TSC showed their intent straight from kick-off with Phil Laker making his first save of the night inside the opening ten seconds. Jiggle's keeper was called upon again soon after with a sharp save to his left after some more slick build-up play from TSC had caused alarm to the Jiggle backline. The game took on the pattern of TSC building methodically and Jiggle hunting the quick counter but as Jiggle started to settle the latter tactic looked more likely to pay off. Phil Williamson's direct style was causing the TSC defence a good few problems, his physical presence bringing about good positions on several occasions. One of these moments brought Jiggle so close to taking the lead. Phil shrugged off a defender's challenge and squared for Dave Carling whose first time shot was superbly saved by the 'guesting' Warren Fiveash in the TSC goal. Excellent goalkeeping. That was the best effort of the half by either side but at the other end Phil was being kept interested at regular intervals. Dave Carling was also on hand with one of his trademark timely sliding tackles when a goal seemed a certainty. TSC kept up the pressure after the break but Jiggle's defence remained firm. Phil was on hand with two more saves midway through the half, the first a good one to claw the ball out of the top corner after a break down the left. TSC began to take more chances as they sought to extend their 100% record. Jiggle as a result were afforded more space on the counter and two great chances came Jiggle's way but weren't converted. First Phil W latched onto a Phil L's left-footed through pass but dragged his shot wide with the keeper to beat then a real guilt-edged 3 on 1 as Dave Leake broke up an attack but was unable to find either Phil or Chris making ground fast to either side. These were real chances, ones that have to be maximised and TSC soon made Jiggle pay for not taking advantage. Showing fast feet a TSC attacker managed to wriggle in behind the defence from where he made no mistake into the bottom corner. It was the goal TSC's possession had merited. TSC set about protecting the lead, a task they accomplished comfortably over the final three minutes. The closest Jiggle came was sub Sam's free-kick to tee up Phil for a rising shot that cleared the bar by a yard. Team: Phil Laker, David Leake, Chris Laker, Dave Carling, Phil Williamson.
