Jiggle outgunned by slick Stars

A last 16 place at the first day tournament of 2004 on Saturday had boosted the confidence in the Jiggle camp after a less than impressive start to the Summer Fives campaign. Could this better form be transferred to the league arena? Pre-season League A favourites Samba Stars were defeated by The Wernham Hoggs last week but would provide a stern test as Jiggle hunted their first points of the Summer season. Jiggle seemed to have something of a record crowd backing them tonight but could the team deliver the goods?

Jiggle slipped into the bottom two of League A after Samba Stars recorded an ultimately comfortable victory in the third week of the Summer Fives.

Despite the scoreline this was the best performance of the three league games to date but after leading and looking comfortable for much of the first half Jiggle were undone by some great finishing by the Samba Stars and a pair of uncharacteristic goalkeeping mistakes by Phil in goal.

Tonight's side showed two changes to the side beaten by Horley last Friday as the summer squad rotation got underway. Phil Williamson, scorer of five goals at the Lawmens Cup on Saturday came in for Dave Carling and made his first league start alongside Sam Cohen in attack. Chris Laker replaced David Leake and partnered Stu MacPherson at the back.

Jiggle began very well and looked more than capable of securing a win against the side reckoned by many to be the pick of a strong division. The breakthrough was not long in coming and fittingly after three dubious decisions against the side recently it came from the spot. Phil Williamson seized the ball and his confident penalty gave the keeper no chance.

Jiggle were looking the better side at this point, hustling the Stars and ensuring very little threat was posed to the Jiggle goal in the opening five minutes. But just as it was looking good Stars showed their quality. Jiggle failed to clear but there was still much to be done. Unfortunately it was done in emphatic style as a crashing volley gave Phil no chance to level the scores.

Half time and 1-1 offered plenty of hope for the second half. This soon evaporated. Jiggle won a corner and decided to commit everyone to attack. It meant the defence were always second favourites to get back once the corner had broken down, and Stars did not waste the opportunity, another impressive finish making it 2-1.

Jiggle continued to compete well and Phil Williamson was agonisingly close to releasing Sam Cohen moments later. Unfortunately while Jiggle looked dangerous in attack things weren't going well at the back. The killer goal arrived swiftly as a fast overlapping defender got in down the left and somehow squeezed his shot into the far corner. The strike came from an incredible angle but there's no way it should have got past the keeper into the far corner.

3-1 down Jiggle were still plugging away and Sam was unfortunate to see the keeper block his attempt to reduce the arrears. Stars however were playing some excellent football by now and added a fourth just before the end with the lamest of the lot as a forwards shot eluded Phil's grasp and bobbled into the net to complete a dismal night for the Jiggle keeper.

It was a better performance tonight but credit to Samba Stars who turned the game on its head with two fine demonstrations of how to finish in a 5-a-side match. They'll probably have to tighten at the back when they come up against the stronger sides in League A but tonight had more than enough in attack to fully deserve their three points. Jiggle head to Croydon for the Atticus Cup on Sunday knowing if the play to this level up there a good tournament should be on the cards. But Crawley Fives is a tough proposition at present and early pacesetters TSC Rangers should ensure the tests keep on coming next Friday.

Team: Phil Laker, Chris Laker, Stuart MacPherson, Phil Williamson, Sam Cohen.
