Disappointing Jiggle go down to Horley

After losing to a dubious penalty in last week's opener against Alltraders, Jiggle had the chance to get their Summer Fives campaign up and running against another of the fancied sides in Week 2. Horley Town Casuals were this evening's opposition and were themselves looking to claim a first win after a goalless draw against The Wernham Hoggs last Friday. Who would get the kick start their season was looking for?

Jiggle remain without a point or a goal after a disappointing performance against an under-strength Horley Town Casuals in the second week of the Summer Fives.

This game followed a pattern not too dissimilar to last week with Jiggle looking just as likely to make the breakthrough when the score was goalless but lacking the creativity to bring themselves level when the opposition had gone in front. Make no mistake good chances of victory against Horley don't come along too often - this undoubtedly was one against a Horley side who looked a shadow of that which has won many Crawley competitions. Jiggle however failed to make the most of the opportunity and Horley's experienced heads made sure that they were well worth their victory.

Jiggle were unchanged from the Alltraders match but welcomed Chris Laker back to the subs bench on his return from uni. Once again then it was Phil between the sticks, Dave Leake and Stu at the back, Dave Carling and Sam in attck.

The early signs were very encouraging. Noticing Horley were without their dangerous tall front man Jiggle looked well capable of soaking up what Horley were equipped to throw at them and with Sam and Dave's pace up front looked to have the ammo to cause Horley's defence a concern or two. So it proved early on as Stu shot wide before another break released Sam who delayed the shot a tad too long and allowed the defender to get back and clear. Then the controversial moment of the half as under pressure from Sam a Horley defender appeared to venture a good yard inside his own box. Unfortunately Jiggle once again saw the decision go in the opposition's favour.

As the half wore on chances became few and far between at either end but Jiggle were to pay for a couple of minutes of sloppy defending midway through the half. After being caught unmanned at the back once and escaping thanks to a poor finish Jiggle didn't heed the warning. A simple counter attack found the ever dangerous George, Dave Leake couldn't get close enough to cover the shot and Phil should have kept it out. Result, 1-0 down. The aforementioned George must relish playing Jiggle as this was the third time the same player has popped up in the same position to score with an unerringly simple low shot into the bottom corner.

While Jiggle had a good chance before the goal, Horley made sure that Jiggle's opportunity was snuffed out during the second half. Unfortunately Jiggle lacked the craft and guile required to make it an uncomfortable second-half for Horley and this win was secured very comfortably in the end. It's hard to think of a good effort conjured by either side in a tepid second period, Sam's header which was comfortably gathered by the keeper was possibly the only effort worthy of comment. Phil at the other end didn't have another save to make.

Full-time confirmed a scoreline that had been near inevitable from the moment Horley went in front. On this evidence, Jiggle will need to raise their standard considerably to make an impression in League A. At present, the team is lacking sharpness, fitness and enthusiasm. With Jiggle set to come up against sides much stronger than this Horley line up over the next nine weeks each of us need to sort out our own performance if we're going to avoid disappointing, lacklustre defeats like this for the rest of the Summer Fives.
