Jiggle took to the field for the final match of the summer tonight. Hopes were high that the side could keep up the form that has seen a marked improvement in the second-half of the season and snatch a finish of at least 8th. A fascinating game was in prospect as opponents Horley Boyz needed three points to book their Finals place. Wins for Caledonian and Horley Town Casuals in the early slot meant they had no room for error. Jiggle have traditionally proved a tough nut to crack for sides in need of that vital win in the last couple of weeks of the season. Could the trick be repeated once more tonight?
FC Jiggleitalittleitllopen 1 The Horley Boyz 2(Williamson 7) Horley Boyz secured their spot in the Finals as Jiggle paid the price for an error strewn opening five minutes in the final week of the Summer Fives. Tonight's reverse means Jiggle finish the season in 9th, respectable enough after lying rock bottom at the half-way stage, but below par on the whole. This evening's game was symbolic of the season as Jiggle conceded two avertable goals and were forced to play catch up. The first five minutes aside Jiggle applied much of the pressure against a side who will likely do well in next week's Finals, but the damage had been done by the early errors. Jiggle were missing the holidaying Dave's Leake and Carling for this one, so this week's side picked itself. Phil in goal, Chris and Phil at the back, Stu and Sam in attack. The pressure was on Horley Boyz going into this one as victories for Caledonian and Horley meant they had to win the game or would miss the Finals. With the above detail in mind the game plan was to maintain a solid, well organised defence in the knowledge chances would definitely come. The longer the match was goalless or better from a Jiggle point of view the more chances Horley Boyz would have to take. It was a nice idea anyway. Less than a minute was on the clock when Jiggle conceded a corner, Phil Williamson did a good job to intercept the set piece but placed the attempted clearance straight to the feet of a waiting attacker who couldn't believe his luck and converted the opening goal. The lacksidasical start continued as Phil released a goal-kick to Phil who returned the ball to his keeper and conceded a free-kick on the edge of the box. That one came to nothing but Jiggle weren't so fortunate two minutes later. Chris' throw back to Phil in goal was good enough but Phil's woeful clearance was straight to an attacker who once more thought all his Christmases had arrived at once. No mistake was made and it was 2-0. All of a sudden Jiggle now seemed to stir and proceeded to have the better of the next fifteen minutes. The deficit was reduced almost straight away as Phil Williamson capped a mazy run with a superb shot deftly flicked into the top corner with the outside of the right boot. An open and entertaining game promised more goals. Phil was on hand with three top drawer saves to prevent Horley Boyz restoring the two goal advantage, while Phil Williamson was denied twice by the Horley No.1. Unquestionably however the best chance for either side came for Sam on the stroke of half-time. Some snappy approach play created the chance, Stu played in Sam. It seemed inevitable the net was about to bulge but Sam seemed to have almost too much time to think and sliced the shot horribly wide. The fast pace continued after the break and Horley had their keeper to thank for a phenomenal stop to deny Phil Williamson moments after the re-start. Stu was again the provider slotting through to Phil, Phil advanced and delivered a shot that looked nailed on for the bottom corner but for a brilliant bit of anticipation and a reflex save from the Horley keeper. Horley continued to look more than capable of adding to their own tally but were finding Phil in fine form as he attempted to atone for his earlier error. Jiggle continued to press for an equaliser but Horley in the knowledge a draw would put them out were becoming increasingly watchful at the back. Some great blocks were made in the closing minutes as Phil and Sam saw a flurry of shots turned away by some committed defending, while Chris and Stu both fired over. Realistically despite Jiggle's pressure Horley created the clearer chances and were very unlucky not to add a third courtesy of a stunning volley at the back post which thundered back of the Jiggle bar. Roy's whistle confirmed Horley's place in the last sixteen and Jiggle's seventh reverse of the season. This was a good performance in the attacking sense but it is not often you will give a decent side a two goal start and get a result. On a bright note the second half of the season has been much more encouraging and 9th is a fair reflection of the campaign. Also Jiggle may have only bagged eight goals this season but there have been at least four real crackers to choose from for goal of the season. Dave Carling and Sam against Wernham Hoggs, Sam against Purple A's and Phil tonight all scored top class goals. The next month will see a series of top level meetings amongst Jiggle's senior players that will assess the options before making a decision on the future footballing direction of the club.
