"December 8, 1805- March 23, 1806
In 1805, Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery stops to make Fort Clatsop. Before the fort is finished, Chief Cobaway meets the expedition for the first time. Later on, Lewis and Clark deem Chief Cobaway most hospitable of all Indians encountered by the Corps of Discovery. On December 30, Fort Clatsop is finished. On New Years, Lewis and Clark’s men celebrate, although they were satisfied with drinking water, and eating boiled elk, and roots. Chief Cobaway also informs the expedition of the elk migration. There was one negative incident, though which was the theft of a Clatsop canoe. On March 22, 1806, Lewis and Clark leave Fort Clatsop, and all its furniture for thanks to Chief Cobaway. It was thanks for his hospitality."
