| What is a holden | ||||||
| In 91 the VN was replaced by a refined and ironed out VP, the VP featured a quiter smoother ride and a remote security system with engine immobaliser, there was a IRS and ABS option on the base and berlia and it was standard on the calais and SS. the list of variations were the comodore,berlina,berlina LX, S, SS, calais and a calais international, there was also a ute, statesman and caprice, the long wheelbase saloons were called the VQ model, engine options were 3.8 V6 and a 5.0 V8, both injected, other holdens were the rodeo, jackaroo, a rebadged toyota camry was the holden apollo, a rebadged corolla was the holden nova wiich replaced the astra that was really a nissan pulsar, a holden calibra that was a rebadged opel monza / vauxhal calibra, performance division HSV developed a optional 180 kw version of the V8. In 1993 Holden brought out the VR , holden designer / artist zmood designed the new grill with the FJ's grill in mind , a new commodore was created to try and take sales from the volvo 850 this was known as the acclaim and was like a basic model with air bags and anti lock brakes, independant rear suspension was also standard on the acclaim to keep it out of trouble, the V6 now had 130 kw bathurst was won this year by a VP holden commodore , HSV released a 5.7 liter 215 kw statesman. in 1995 the VS replaced the VR with a new ecotec injection set up on the V6 wich now boasts 147 kw, in 1996 there also was a V6 supercharger option on the calais, statesman and caprice giving the V6 as much power as the V8 but less thirsty however the higher octane fuel it runs on is dearer, the VS looked much Like the VR with the updated holden logo being the most noticable change. In 1997 the VT was released with a new larger body and standard on all models was equiptment like electric drivers seat and cruise control,trip computer, IRS, ABS and SRS, the supercharged V6 was tweaked up to 171 kw and the 5 liter V8 was now upto 176 kw, troughout the production of the VT the 5.0L was replaced by the 5.7 Gen 3 all alloy V8, The Holden family sedan has always been the most popular police car here in Australia and now with the 5.7 fitted it has become quite difficult to outrun the police even if you are one of those driver's with a new porsche or some high tech import sports car the 5.7 puts up a tough challenge unless you drive a holden HSV with extra power or you have supercharged your own 5.7. In 2000 the VX was released, the VX was a further refined version of the VT with new tail lights and grill treatment as well as new fabrics inside, The GTS now puts out 300kw wich is good for a family sedan The GTS has a sporty Leather interior and rides on 19" rims, Holden releases it's New coupe wich due to public demand is named the Monaro, The Monaro was given the same welcome response as it did back in 68 when Australia recieved it's first muscle coupe. Two versions of the monaro were released, there was a CV6 wich has a supercharged 3.8 liter V6 under the hood and a CV8 that has a 5.7 liter V8 for power, In some of the colours that monaro is availiable with the seats and instrument cluster are colour coded to the body, The monaro is a four seater two door rear wheel drive coupe with independant rear suspension and it's only competition here in Australia comes from makes like mercedes benz and are far more expensive. In 2002 the VY replaced the VX with a new body, competition gets tougher as Ford also releases it's new BA falcon, ford finally have made large advancements with there six cylinder family sedan now having a DOHC set up on it, This year Bathurst was won by a commodore. In 2003 a series 2 of the VY was released. The base model comes even closer to a luxury sedan now with rear reading lamps wich were only used on sporty or luxury models in the past. Active headrest are fitted to the acclaim and calais and the calais now also has heated mirrors. Holden saw sence in adding a dual cab ute to the range and the crewman was released, Holden also tackles the subaru Liberty / Outback market with a all wheel drive wagon and utillty variation of the commodore called adventura, the 5.7 litre V8 mate beast makes the old Subaru look a bit girly. In 2004 The Monaro was sold in the US as a Pontiac GTO as sneak previewed in the movie XXX, the pontiac has a reworked grill and is left hand drive. the monaro was also sold in the middle east as a Lumina. a new alloytec 190 kw V6 replaced the previous ecotec 3.8 litre V6, the new engine was a 3.6 litre with a light weight alloy block. a Torana cocept car was displayed at the 2004 motor show wich seemed to be the centre of attention at the motorshow, Not quite like the previous Toranas wich were a small-medium low cost alternative to the larger holden sedans of the day, The concept seemed to cash in on the sporting heritage of the GTR, GTR XU-1, SS anndSLR/5000 of the seventies when we had our smaller holdens fitted with similar engines to its big brother kingswood, premier etc, However it looked a bit like the new concept was pretty in range with the vectra but sharing more lines with ya Nannas subaru liberty / legacy hatch with big wheels, pretty paint and a custom retrim, This time it didn't run a triple carb red six with a lumpy stick or a thumpin five litre but a twin turbo V6. A great name for a concept especailly considering the welcome of the monaro. but not quite fitting rite with the name. a two door hatch and a four door sedan or a sporty four door sedan may have suited it more, Holden takes another win at Bathurst in the V8 supercars, with Ford filling most of the next few positions, it would have been a happy day for ford fans had the K mart commodore failed in the final laps. 2005 ahhh......... |
