| TEXT: Giancoli, Douglas Physics 5th ed, Prentice Hall, 1998 Course Outline: (days = instructional days) Unit I - Kinematics in 1 & 2 Dimension - 11 days Unit II - Motion & Force: Dynamics - 8 days Unit III - Circular Motion and Gravity - 10 days Unit IV - Work & Energy - 10 days Unit IV - Linear Momentum - 8 days Unit V - Fluids - 8 days Unit VI - Vibrations, Waves & Sound - 10 days Unit VII - Temperature & Kinetic Theory - 8 days Unit VIII- Heat & Thermodynamics - 10 days Unit IX - Light: Geometric Optics - 10 days Unit X - The Wave Nature of Light - 10 days Unit XI - Special Theory of Relativity - 10 days Exams : Approximately one exam per unit. There will be a final at the end of each semester. Each exam will be worth 100 pointd. Homework: Homework will be given nightly and due the next day. It will be turned in about 1/2 the time on a ramdon basis. HW can be turned in one day late for 1/2 credit (full cridit if an excused absense.) All homework will be stored in a notebook (portfolio) and turned in at the end of the semester for 100 points of credit. Projects & Labs: you will be working on at least one project a semester and about 5 labs. The projects and labs are hands-on applications of the the material you are learning in class. Rocket Project - The Rocket Project is one of the most exciting things you will do in school. Rocket Day will be Wed. Oct. 27th. Required Items - You are required to have a calculator for this course. I highly recommend a graphing calculator and the TI-89 is the best. Also keep all of your assignments in a folder to be turned in at announced times. I am expecting you to take notes so bring appropriate materials to class. |
