JAN TSCHICHOLD
process page

Week 9
15/06/06
I got the assignment today. Went back and randomly chose to Hermann Zapf to write the report on. Placed a couple of sites on Zapf on my favourites.

Week 10
18/06/06
Headed to the national library. I went straight to level 8, the arts section. It turned out that the books I needed were mainly on the 7th floor. Unfortunately there were limited resources on Hermann Zapf. I decided to do Jan Tschichold instead as there were a number of books on him. Did my work for a couple of hours. I wanted to photocopy some images but I forgot to bring my cash-card.

Week 10
20/06/06
Late into the development of the assignment I realized that I have saved the process page as my Authoring class assignment. I had used this process page as a template for the other assignment. I could not undo as I only realized the problem today. What done is done. I have to finish this nonetheless. So whatever comes before this entry is actually what I did to the best of my recollection.

Week 10
21/06/06
As I was writing down in my sketchbook, I had a ‘Eureka” sort of moment. I realized that the text that I copying from had a small letter ‘a’ like this font. I am accustomed to writing my ‘a’ like an ‘o’ with a tail. I assume that whoever designed must have thought that people might confuse the ‘a’ with an ‘o’. Thus the creation of a new ‘a’. This is mere my speculation as I have yet to check out which form of letter a comes first.

Week 10
23/06/06
I made another trip down to the National Library. I photocopied the required materials. And fine tuned my sketchbook.

Week 10
24/06/06
Cut and paste session on my sketchbook.

Week 12
06/07/06
During the Web Design lecture, our second part of assignment 2 was made known to us. An idea immediately struck to mind. I want to make a book design, or maybe a book jacket for a Penguin book. Tschichold was responsible for overseeing over 500 publications of Penguin books. Never before has any typographer been involved in a role of such scale. Hence, I feel that a book jacket will truly reflect the work of Tshcichold.

Week 12
09/07/06
I decided look around my house for what I needed to create the object for the second part od assignment2. I needed a cardboard of some sort for a book jacket. Incidentally I had some leftover vanguard sheet which I could use for this purpose. And the colour was similar to that of earliest cover Tschichold did. I put aside glue, some scotch tape, cutting utensils a Penguin book which I have to reference. I am making a book jacket

Week 13
10/07/06
I brought my materials to school. I executed my idea of making a book jacket to commemorate Jan Tschichold. Overall it was a pretty productive day. I managed to turn my vanguard sheet into a book jacket. I also finished doing the font for the title and drew a penguin. Basically, I fused some aspects of the current design to that of Tschichold's. I painfully penned the title with Sabon typeface. Sabon is the typeface that Tschichold wants to be remembered for. I plan to paint the center portion is is now very plain. This is to reflect Tschichold's childhood dream of becoming an artist. His parents were against this and they compromised that he should be a teacher who teaches art. Go figure.

Week 13
13/07/06
I planned to scrap the idea of painting the front cover as it is not essentially who Tschichold was. I decided to, like many works of Tschichold, let the typography be the design. I am doing the cover of TALES FROM SHAKESPEARE. What else is more synonymous than Shakespeare than the English language or more precise, words. I decided to use words to describe Shakespeares' work instead of using an image. I chose four words to reflect Shakespeare typical themes in his stories. They are Love, Revenge, Tragedy and Loyalty. I would have loved to arrange the words to create a sound design using Tschichold but alas I am not worthy. Instead I decided to mimick one of Tshichold's work I replace the words with mine.

Week 13
15/07/06
Hmmm. The back looks very empty.

Week 14
16/07/06
Another web design class. Our progress of the object was graded.

Week 14
19/07/06
The big day. Exhibition day. After animation class, I brought my work to the TFA. As I thought there were just a few who did Tschichold. I could say mine was outstanding as the rest did posters.

Front Cover

The front cover is plain. The main attraction is designed after one of Tschichold's design.

Front and Back View

This is basically how my object looks like.

Back Cover

The back cover represents the childhood dream of Tshichold wanting to become an artist.

Front and Back Concept

I reused a concept that Tshichold used in one of his books. An illustration of views from the front and back.
