This is set some time in the future when the only two remaining superpowers on earth were America and China. The Earth wasn't big enough to people started populating outer space and left the Earth-that-was behind.
The plantes closest to the hub were governed by something called the Alliance-- which is the government, law-enforcer and all around nosy people.
Those on the outer planets rebelled against their authority and the Independants (Browncoats) lost.
Malcolm Reynolds was a sergeant in the war (on the losing if not the right side) and he's taken to crime in the skies on his boat Serenity and crew which includes a mercenary called Zoe, her husband/pilot Wash, a mercenary called Jayne (yes, it's girl's name-- just don't tell him that.) and a Companion (legalised prostitute) called Inara.
Also coming on board are Shepherd Book (Priest of some description) and two fugitives called Simon and River Tam.
Simon is a doctor and River was taken by the Alliance and sent to the Academy where they messed with her brain and tried to make her into an uber-asassin. They succeeded before she escaped with the help of her brother but didn't realise that they'd also made her crazy.
An insane psychic with lethal combat skills and a grudge a mile wide.
The hi-jinks that ensue.
