Birth Name - Conrad Stafford Bain
Born - February 4, 1923 in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, along with identical twin brother Bonar.
High School - was wrapped up in athletic pursuits such as hockey and speed skating when, in his junior year, he suddenly became fascinated with acting.
College - studied at Alberta's Banff School of Fine Arts
Military - served in the Canadian army during World War II
More College - resumed his training at New York's American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
Stratford Shakespeare Festival - worked at the Stratford (Ontario) Shakespeare Festival.
Live Television - before 1956
Broadway - appeared in the 1956 Broadway revival of Eugene O'Neill's The Iceman Cometh. He spent most of his career on the stage.
Before "Maude" - he briefly appeared on soap operas, as well as in a few small movie roles.
"Maude" - after being spotted in a small New York stage production by Norman Lear he starred as stuffy next-door neighbor, Dr. Arthur Harmon on the television series "Maude." The series debuted on the CBS television network on September 12, 1972. He gained national fame in this role. After 141 episodes, the series ended after the sixth season on April 22, 1978.
"Diff'rent Strokes" - immediately after the cancellation of "Maude" he began starring as Philip Drummond in the television series "Diff'rent Strokes" which debuted on November 3, 1978. The series ran until March 7, 1986 producing 189 episodes.
After "Diff'rent Strokes" - lives in retirement with his wife Monica Sloan in Los Angles. Although retired, he continues to guest star occasionally.
