1997 C/K Pickup Transmissions

5-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION

A 5-speed manual transmission with overdrive is standard on all C/K Pickups. Three versions are available:

The improved New Venture Gear 4500 manual transmission, compared to the transmission it replaces, features:

4L60-E 4-SPEED ELECTRONIC AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

The GM 4L60-E 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is optional on C/K1500 and C/K2500 models with a GVWR of less than 8,600 lbs. The 4L60-Es "intelligent" electronic controls allow the transmission to match the engines performance and deliver excellent fuel efficiency.

The 4L60-E has been enhanced in two ways for 1997. First, the transmission fluid pump has been refined to achieve as much as 20 percent increase in pump output for smooth shifts and increased operating efficiency. Second, a revised clutch plate design reduces the potential for slippage for more efficient operation.

The 4L60-Es wide range of gear ratios enhances both performance and fuel economy. The 3.06:1 first-gear ratio provides high torque multiplication for initial acceleration. The overdrive 0.70:1 fourth gear reduces engine rpm at cruising speed, thereby increasing fuel economy and reducing wear.

The 4L60-E provides the precision and flexibility of electronic controls. The Vehicle Control Module (VCM) measures key vehicle input, including throttle position, vehicle speed, gear range, temperature and engine load. Shift points and shift smoothness are controlled by four solenoids that are connected to the VCM.

The 4L60-Es second-gear start feature provides an extra measure of control in hazardous driving conditions. By moving the gear selector to the Drive 2 position, the driver can reduce torque to the drive wheels, increasing control during initial acceleration on slippery surfaces.

4L60-E transmissions are factory-filled with long-life Dexron III automatic transmission fluid that never needs replacement under normal conditions.*

A brake/transmission shift interlock is included with all optional automatic transmissions. The interlock requires the driver to apply the brake pedal to shift out of Park.

*Maintenance needs vary with different uses and driving conditions.

4L80-E 4-SPEED ELECTRONIC AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

The heavy-duty 4L80-E electronically controlled 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is optional on two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive C/K Pickups of 8,600 lbs. GVWR and above, including Crew-Cab. The rugged 4L80-E has a maximum engine torque rating of 440 lb.-ft. It is also standard on models equipped with either the 6.5L L56 or L65 V8 Turbo-Diesel engines.

The 4L80-Es wide range of gear ratios enhances both performance and fuel economy. The 2.48:1 first-gear ratio provides high torque multiplication for initial acceleration. The overdrive 0.75:1 fourth gear reduces engine rpm at cruising speed, thereby increasing fuel economy and reducing wear.

Like the 4L60-E, the 4L80-E interfaces with the vehicles VCM for smooth, precise shifting. The module is designed to compensate for variations in temperature and altitude to enhance the engines performance, fuel efficiency and reliability.

The 4L80-E has been improved for 1997.

  • Enhanced garage shifts improves shifts to Drive and Reverse.
  • Revised fourth gear improves transmission efficiency.
  • Revised lubrication circuit improves transmission lubrication.
  • New transmission cooler lines work more efficiently.
  • New contoured bottom pan helps assure adequate oil supply.
  • New bottom pan drain plug has been added for easier service. The 4L80-E provides the precision and flexibility of electronic controls. The VCM measures key vehicle inputs, including throttle position, vehicle speed, gear range, temperature and engine load. Transmission shift points and shift smoothness are controlled by four solenoids that are connected to the VCM.

The VCM acts as an interface between the engine and transmission to provide the feel of a virtually "seamless" powertrain. Shift timing is controlled electronically by signals sent to the valve bodys shift solenoids, which activate the shift valves and execute the gear changes.

The 4L80-Es 310mm torque converter is specially designed to enhance initial acceleration.

A brake/transmission shift interlock is standard on all models. The interlock requires the driver to apply the brake pedal to shift from PARK.

4L80-E transmissions are factory-filled with long-life Dexron III automatic transmission fluid that never needs replacement under normal conditions.*
