1997 C/K Pickup Suspension and Insta-Trac

SUSPENSION

FRONT

C/K Pickups utilize an independent Short/Long Arm (SLA) front suspension and a stabilizer bar. Chevy C/K Pickups have utilized SLA suspension since 1988 many years ahead of Ford which introduced a similar system for the 1997 F150 Series Pickup. SLA suspension helps the front wheels step over bumps for a stable ride and enhanced control. Chevy two-wheel-drive models have computer-selected, friction-free coil spring for squeak-free operation, while four-wheel-drive versions are equipped with torsion bars for additional ground clearance. The torsion bars are computer-selected to optimize ride and handling.

The front differential is mounted to the front frame with rubber bushings on four-wheel-drive models to isolate road bumps and jolts. The C/K platform minimizes the protrusion of the transmission, transfer case and driveshafts below the body for additional protection when traveling over uneven terrain.

REAR

C/K Pickups are equipped with a variable-rate, two-stage, multi-leaf spring rear suspension. The longer set of leaves provides a smooth ride when the vehicle is light on cargo. As additional passengers and cargo are loaded, the longer leaves flatten out, and shorter, stiffer leaves deliver additional support without sacrificing a comfortable ride.

INSTA-TRAC

The patented Insta-Trac system is standard on four-wheel-drive C/K Pickups. The Insta-Trac system makes it easy to shift into and out of four-wheel drive without leaving the cab.

Insta-Trac allows "on-the-fly" shifting from 2WD to 4WD High and back at any speed. The system also includes a 4WD Low gear for more demanding 4WD maneuvers such as climbing steep grades or driving through deep snow or mud.

An electronic shift transfer case is also available. It makes shifting from 2WD to 4WD High and back again as easy as pushing a button located on the instrument panel. By eliminating a traditional floor shift mechanism, more interior space is added to C/K for added occupant comfort (available on K1500 and K2500 models below 8,600 lbs. GVWR).
