The pace package consists of a production Chevy C/K equipped with a 6.5-foot Fleetside box. A special pearlescent white paint job is overlaid with colorful Craftsman series graphics. Strobe lights are integrated with a spoiler-like device at the trailing edge of the bed. Chassis alterations include Goodyear 275/40ZR-17 GSC tires on Boyds polished aluminum billet wheels and a lowered ride height. Bell Tech springs and spindles lower the front 2.5-inches and the rear 4.0-inches for improved road holding.
Underhood muscle comes from Chevys renowned 5.7-liter Vortec V8. Redesigned for 1996, this engine uses sequential central port fuel injection and other improvements to enhance performance, improve fuel economy and lower emissions. GM Powertrain calls the approach "no trade-offs" and enthusiast magazine reviews to date have been overwhelmingly positive. In regular production trim, the 5.7-liter Vortec churns out an ample 255 horsepower at 4600 rpm. Thats upped to 291 hp @ 4750 rpm, and 360 lb-ft torque @ 3500 rpm for race pacing duty, achieved by means of cold-air induction and an open exhaust system.
Pickup truck racing is one of the hottest new forms of motorsports, and Chevrolet takes great pleasure in its involvement with this fast-accelerating series. In fact, Chevy trucks have captured both manufacturers championships awarded in the fledgling Craftsman SuperTrucks series. At Orlando and other NASCAR Craftsman events, pickup truck fans will have an excellent opportunity to witness the performance attributes of Vortec V8 power.
