Its obvious that C/K Pickup is one of the most popular vehicles in America. And, for 1997, it becomes even more appealing with the addition of select new features. A right front-passenger air bag is now standard on all models under 8,600 lbs. GVWR. A switch on Regular- and Extended-Cab models deactivates the passenger-side air bag when using a rear-facing infant carrier in the front seat. Air bags help reduce the chance of injury in certain moderate to severe frontal collisions. Always wear safety belts, even with air bags.
Improved power steering is another C/K plus for 1997. Electronic Variable Orifice steering (EVO) improves steering ease at lower vehicle speeds such as during parking maneuvers or launching a boat. At higher vehicle speeds, steering effort reverts to normal levels.
The transmission fluid pump for the 4L60-E 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission has been refined to achieve as much as a 20 percent increase in pump output resulting in smooth shifts and increased operating efficiency. And a revised clutch plate design reduces the potential for slippage, providing for more efficient transmission operation.
The heavy-duty counterpart to the 4L60-E the 4L80-E 4-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission also receives enhancements. Garage shifts have been improved for smoother shifts from Park to Reverse. Revised fourth gear and clutch plate designs provide improved transmission efficiency, and a bottom pan drain plug has been added for easier service.
An improved, heavy-duty 5-speed manual transmission with overdrive (MW3) is available on all C/K2500 (requires optional heavy-duty 8,600 GVWR) and all C/K3500 Series Regular-Cab, Extended-Cab and Crew-Cab models. Benefits include a revised reverse gear ratio (from 5.61:1 to 5.04:1) for quicker shifting response, reduced transmission noise and improved shift feel. A torsional damper for diesel applications has also been added to soften the shifts as the the clutch is engaged.
An alternative fuel Vortec 5700 V8 engine is also available for 1997 (interim availability). This package is available only on the C2500 Series Regular-Cab Long-Box model with optional 8,600-lb. GVWR, 3.73 rear axle ratio and four-speed automatic transmission. Business owners and fleet operators appreciate the environmental and cost benefits of alternative fuels.
Theres good news for off-roaders, too. All K1500 Pickups now have a reduced turning diameter for easier maneuvering off-road or in tight spots.
New C/K Pickup exterior colors for 1997 include Medium Royal Blue Metallic, Medium Blue-Green Metallic and Dark Carmine Red Metallic.
The popular third door option, introduced in 1996 (available on Silverado Extended-Cab models with the Vortec 5000 or 5700 V8 engine and automatic transmission), will be more readily available for 1997. The third door provides wide-open passenger-side access to the rear compartment for more convenient loading and unloading of passengers and cargo.
Theres a model in the C/K Pickup lineup to suit virtually every personal or light-duty commercial application. From workhorse half-tons to popular Extended-Cabs with the available third door to the four-door, six-passenger Crew-Cabs, the 1997 Chevy C/K lineup delivers a model to get the job done. Its just one more reason why its the best selling GM vehicle.
As a final note, Chevrolet/Geo recognizes the importance of mobility to everyones life and, therefore, offers financial assistance to persons with disabilities through the General Motors Mobility Program. This program provides financial assistance -- up to $1,000 -- toward the cost of any aftermarket adaptive equipment for drivers or passengers and/or vehicle "alerting devices" for deaf and hearing impaired drivers. A special feature of the program is single-transaction GMAC financing for the vehicle and its adaptive aids.
