GAME 5

With the series tied, the Twins sent Kevin Brown to the mound against Hideo Nomo. Brian Giles got on base for the third consecutive game, leading off with a single off Brown and leaving Twins fans worried about another first inning disaster. A ground out by Renteria moved Giles to 2B and an Aubrey Huff single put runners on the corners with one out. The Twins walked Delgado to load up the bases and bring up Geoff Jenkins who drilled a single to score Giles. With the bases still loaded, Vinny Castilla ripped another Kevin Brown pitch for a single to cash in the Os second run with the bases still loaded and only one out. Mark Kotsay drove another Orioles run with a sac fly and Kevin Brown finally wiggled off the hook getting a groundout from Luis Rivas, but leaving the Twins trailing 3-0.

The Twins came out fighting in the first, with Furcal leading off the game with a single. After a fly out by Larry Walker, Nomo hit Scott Rolen and walked J.D. Drew to load up the bases for Richie Sexson with one out. Sexson grounded out into a double play, leaving the Twins to ponder a wasted opportunity.

Kevin Brown found a comfort zone and dispatched the Orioles in order in the second. Milton Bradley led off the inning with a ground out, but Wells singled and stole second to put a runner in scoring position for the Twins. Ben Davis flied out for the second out of the inning. Brian Roberts finally ended the Twins draught in the clutch by smacking a run-scoring double and Raffy Furcal followed him up with a single scoring Roberts to drive in his team leading 6th RBI of the series. The Twins finished the inning down 3-2.

Brown again retired the side in order in the third. J.D. Drew and Richie Sexson led off the third with consecutive walks. Bradley grounded into the double-play, but Vernon Wells managed to single home Drew and tie the score up at 3 before the inning ended. In the fourth, Roberts and Furcal set the table with a single and a walk. A double-steal put runners on second and third for Larry Walker with none out. Walker hit a sac fly to score Roberts. Rolen singled off of Nomo to bring Furcal home, but a great throw by Damien Miller nailed Rolen trying to take second. The Twins added a third run on a J.D. Drew solo HR, giving them the Twins a 6-3 lead.

Brown continued to cruise recording his 11th consecutive out by striking out Damien Miller in the fifth. The streak ended with a walk to Brian Giles and a single by Edgar Renteria putting runners on 1st and 3rd with one out the heart of the order coming up to bat for the Orioles. A questionable balk gave the Os a run and moved Renteria to second base. Aubrey Huff grounded into what, before the balk, might have been an inning-ending double play. Instead Renteria moved to third base and Carlos Delgado came up to bat. A wild pitch by Brown brought in the Os second run of the inning. A fly out by Delgado ended the inning, with the Twins lead cut to 6-5.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Twins put together their own one-out rally. After a single by Vernon Wells, the Orioles pulled Joe Nathan and went to the bullpen for Dan Kolb. The Twins countered by bringing in Gerald Laird to pinch-hit. Laird got the best of the battle, singling to put runners on first and second. Kolb then walked Roberts to load up the bases for Raffy Furcal and the top of the order. Furcal promptly singled, driving home Wells and Laird, leaving runners on first and third. Walker singled home Roberts with Furcal moving to third base. After facing four batters and failing to record an out, Kolb was replaced by Mike Koplove. Koplove came in and got a key strikeout of Scott Rolen to bring J.D. Drew to the plate in the clutch. Drew smashed a double scoring Furcal, but a key throw nailed Walker at the plate to end the Twins rally. Minnesota took a 10-5 lead into the top of the 6th inning.

Both teams had plenty of additional opportunities to score. In the sixth and seventh innings, the Os started rallies getting runners on first and second with one out, but Twins pitchers Kevin Brown and Latroy Hawkins got inning-ending double-plays to preserve the Twins lead. The Os managed to get another runner on in the eighth, but hit into their third inning-ending double-play. Minnesota added a meaningless run in the eighth inning and the Twins went on to win game five by a score of 11-5. The series headed back to Baltimore with the Os needing to win both games to clinch their first Fastball World Series.
