Subject:  Belle's home! (and a question RE: hollistic treatment)

Belle came home last night! She is much happier with that great big
tumor gone. The staff at Univ. of Illinois said she had
been "beagling" during the day, Monday. Haven't heard it myself, but
I can't wait. It's been over a month since we've heard that hound
let out a nice loud bay. I don't think I'll tell that dog to be
quiet again.

In three weeks, we start radiation and possibly her first chemo.
Right now we are trying to keep her away from the staples
(Elizabethan collar) and trying to put weight back on her.

Question: Our veterenarians are a bit skeptical of the different
supplements I have read about on the internet. Consequently, so am
I. But I am open minded. It makes sense that nature might have
something to offer here. Does anyone know of clinical trials,
studies or papers on some of these things?

Thanks,

Joel and Belle

Joel,

Glad Belle is home. It is so different without them around. About the
holistic stuff - I have heard a lot about flaxseed oil with lignans. It has
omega 3 fatty acids in it and it is supposed to help the immune system. I
give my dogs 1 tablespoon in some canned food (Hills n/d for Sassy and
regular food for the other) everyday (one has cancer but you can't give one
and not the other!!) I also give them vitamin c (I got the chewable). I
have also given them tuna and salmon. I hope this helps!!

Here are some of the supplements that have been proven to boost the
immune system and help the body's natural defenses fight off disease.
I have used most of these with good results.

Flaxseed oil w/cottage cheese
Grape Seed Extract
Vitamin C
olive leaf extract
Ip-6
MGn-3

Transfer Factor Plus with IP-6

http://tfpets4life.homestead.com

TF Plus boosts the activity of natural killer cells

XtraLife Pet Supplement with Immunocal

http://www.immune-response.net/go/lifeworks

Immunocal raises glutathione levels which boosts immune system and
helps other antioxidants such as vitamin C and E be more efective.

I have been researching immune enhancing substances for 7 years and
have clinical research papers available.

Click on Medline to search for all research articles related to
Immunocal and Glutathione research. You can also click on Virtual
Library to request certain reports and documents. Select the ones you
want and they will be sent to you within a day or two by email.

I will email you the clinical studies for Transfer Factor when i get
back home tomorrow. I am out of town till then.

Joel,

Great to hear that Belle is home!

The only supplement we've used with Char is Bone Marrow Plus. She was having
trouble with blood counts originally and we were having to postpone chemo
treatments. She's done much better since starting the BMP. It was
recommended by our "holistic vet" He's a great believer in holistic therapies
for some things but not for others. Example: Our dog with epilepsy was on
all sorts of supplements, acupuncture and eventually gold bead. It truly
helped her and brought back a quality to her life which western medicine had
been unable to attain. Cancer though.... All he would recommend was the BMP
and traditional chemo. I know there are others out there though that do
supplement their pups. I too would be interested in knowing what they think
might be beneficial.

Good luck

Dear Joel,
No one was more skeptical of holistic treatments than I. Unfortunately,
surgery was not an option for Peanut, but we had to do something to help her.
A holistic pet store directed me to "The Nature of Animal Healing" by Martin
Goldstein, DVM, which I highly recommend. His theory on cancer and supplements
is extremely thought-provoking. We subsequently contacted his office in South
Salem
, NY
and are working with him and his associate Dr. Tina Aiken, both
conventionally-trained veterinarians who at some point realized the merit of
holistics. I dreaded telling my vet that we had chosen this route and was
shocked when he said he supported our decision whole-heartedly. He said that
he has seen miraculous results from holistic treatments, even though his office
does not practice them. Surprising for a vet to admit this, but he was totally
supportive. We have since started Peanut on the regimen prescribed by Dr.
Goldstein. Our vet had told us that Peanut's tumor would grow extremely
rapidly and that she had little time. Indeed, in one week, it grew from
non-existent to the size of a fist (on a 7 lb chihuahua). Since starting the
holistics, the growth has completely stopped. I dont hope for a cure, but it
has certainly made a believer out of me, and her quality of life has been
perfect-she has no idea she is sick and is happy all the time. We have no
doubt whatsoever that we made the right decision for her. She gets 12
supplements a day, plus a salve with DMSO in it (you will find some very good
research on the internet on this stuff) rubbed on her tumor. Someone mentioned
that their dog wouldnt eat the cottage cheese which must be mixed with flax
seed oil with lignans in order to activate it, and Peanut was the same. She
would run from it. But our vet said it was fine to mix the flax and cottage
cheese very well together, then put it into her food, and that did the trick.
Sorry to be long-winded, but I am quite enthusiastic about this topic since
disovering its benefits thus far. A month ago I would have said they were
useless. Now I am a quite a supporter. If you would like any further info as
to what regimen Peanut is on, let me know. Wishing Belle wonderful results
with whatever course you decide on for her.
Hugs,
Sue & Peanut
