I'll Lend You a Puppy

I will send you for a while, a puppy, God said,

for you to love her while she lives, and mourn her when she's dead.

Maybe for twelve or fourteen years, or maybe just two or three;

but, will you, 'til I call her back, take care of her for me?

She'll bring her charms to gladden you, and, should her day be brief,

you'll always have her memory as solace for your grief.

I cannot promise she will stay, since all from earth return,

but, there are lessons taught below that I want this pup to learn.

I've looked the whole world over in search of teachers true,

and from each and every one of them I have chosen you.

Now, will you give her all your love,

nor think the labor vain,

nor curse me when I come to take

my dog back again.

For all the joys this puppy will bring,

the risk of grief we'll run.

We'll shelter her with tenderness,

we'll love her while we may.

And for the happiness we've known, we’ll forever grateful stay.

But, should you call her back much sooner than we've planned,

we'll brave the bitter grief that comes, and try to understand.

And, if, by our love, we've managed your wishes to achieve,

in loving memory of the pup we raised, and to help us while we grieve,

when our faithful bundle departs this world of strife,

if you would lend us another puppy, we’ll love him all his life.

God saw her getting weary; He did what he thought best.

He put His hands around her, and said, "You Come and rest."

He opened up His golden gate, on that heartbreaking day,

And with His arms around her, she gently slipped away.

It broke our hearts to lose her, but she did not go alone.

A part of us went with her, the day God called her home.

Looking back on the memory of the dance we shared, beneath the stars above.
For a moment all the world was right, how was I to know that you'd ever say goodbye?
And now I'm glad I didn't know the way it all would end, the way it all would go.
Our lives are better left to chance,

I could have missed the pain, but I'd have had to miss the dance.

The Dance - (Garth Brooks)

When you got sick I thought I'd die
But you - you gave me strength
You lost your leg, you took your pills
But always, you were brave!

I could protect you from the road
from hunger, theft or snow
But I can't save you from the cancer
eating up your bones

I've cried a thousand tears for you
I know there's millions more
You never cried or sulked,
Instead, you just lived more

You could've wound up anywhere
How lucky could I be?
That such an awesome dog as you
Could end up here with me!

If I could take your pain as mine
I'd do it right away
I'm not sure I can live without you
even for a day

My love for you will never die -
we'll never be apart.
I never will forget you girl,
your pawprint's on my heart.

So when tomorrow starts without me,

Don't think we're far apart,

For every time you think of me,

I'm right here, in your heart
