~Starbase Canon~

The “Wormhole”

Wormhole is in quotes because it’s not a wormhole proper, in other words it  isn’t a completely stable path. When the Horatio Nelson emerged from the rift, it came out near one of the two class M planets (Gintol and Juntol) near the sight of SB 25. The opening of the rift had an unexpected reaction with a substance found only on the planet Gintol.  With this substance, called Gintonite, ships are able to open a rift and travel the distance between Sol (the coordinates of the opening on the other side have not been determined) and SB 25 in a matter of days instead of a year.

Reasons the Federation can't mine a ton of this substance -- to send fleets of ships through and colonizing the space etc. like it would currently explored space -- are as follows:

~ The substance is too complex to be replicated.

~ The substance is in a limited supply. We can mine it, know what it is, and have some of it. But the supply isn’t inexhaustible. That means that the number of ships that can be given the substance is in the tens and not the hundreds or thousands.

~ The use of the rift damages subspace. Therefore frequent and heavy use of the rift is not an option. Therefore the ships stationed at SB 25 can use it to traverse the space to do missions in explored space, but there will be no large scale deployment through it.

Starbase 25 – General Info

Here are some more details about SB 25. For a picture, check out http://www.angelfire.com/trek/starbase25/index.html

SB25 is the largest undertaking of its kind. It is minimally twice as big as DS9 or any other known Starbase. 10,000 rooms for personal quarters, banquet halls, shops, restaurants, bars, holosuites, etc. lines its interior. It would take days to explore it. It has a fair mix of civilians and starfleet personnel on board.

There are two planets in the system, M Class, which has colonists living on them. The Starbase is the big hub in the area. The place is a mixture of humans and other federation species and aliens. Some are Federation members, some aren’t, some want to be, some don’t. Some are really crazy exotic, some are more mundane.

It has a compliment of warships for protection and the SB itself is HEAVILY armed. The warships are NPC vessels until the fleet begins expanding and they are replaced with PC ships.

The Starbase is its own email group list. When ships in the fleet return from a mission, they will dock in the form of  subscribing the Nelson to the SB 25 list. That way any ship docked will see the emails from any other ship docked. In this way, we will have an established sense of community and a canon-like timeline.

Starbase 25 History

The Starbase has been being built since 2361 (it is now 2381). The supply train to the SB from Sol has been in constant motion since 2361, even during the Dominion War. The project was approved and then kept top secret the entire time. Resources were committed and no one usurped the allocated resources for the war effort because almost no one knew about it. Even now, its existence is a closely guarded secret, as is the method of travel. There is a ‘supply highway’ that extends from SB 25 to explored space. The supply highway is relatively secure, but all space on either side of it is completely unexplored (picture a road through a heavily wooded area, except in three dimensions).

The Starbase was commanded by the Chief Construction Engineer and has been for years. When the HN arrived, J’Dem became the ipso facto commander until Admiral Britanicus made his way there and permenantly  took over command.

Gintol, Juntol and Gintonite

Starbase 25 is located in the Junto system. There are two Class M planets known as Juntol and Gintol. Gintol is the planet where the ore we need is located and mined. The ore is called Gintonite, and  must be mined in extremely cold conditions, at least -40 degrees C. If Gintonite reaches a temp of -20 C, it turns into a vapor. This vapor is what opens the wormhole. To use the Gintonite, we must beam it to the proper coordinates and use a modified heat beam from the main deflector. The heating must be done slowly or the vapor will dissipate too quickly and the wormhole will not open.

The Velox

The Velox are a race, centries old which inhabit the planet Gintol.

The Velox, as it turned out were only interested in one thing, and given the circumstances of the situation, they were granted their request that Gintol, and by extension the Velox, become a protectorate of the United Federation of Planets. They would be afforded the protection of Starfleet but not required to join the United Federation of Planets to do so, though that avenue remained open to them should they decide to pursue it at a later date.

With the exception of the mines containing Gintonite, the vapor they thought would allow them access to the rift, the Federation colonies would be restricted to half of Gintol and all of Juntol, the other M Class planet in the system. All in all, the negotiations were successful, with all parties coming away with the crux of what they wanted.

Tel'Krenat

Tel'Krenat is the name of a haunted city under the surface of Gintol which the Velox deserted centuries ago. Excavators uncovered the ancient city in 2382.

The Kaurian

The Kaurian are a race which have a mysterious nomadic network, almost pirate in nature, which  have been stealing technology for decades. The few encounters we've had with them so far have been very hostile. In 2382, the USS Washington came into contact with the Kaurians again during a standard patrol. It was discovered that the Kaurian social structure  is centered around a hierarchical structure with a quasi-religious military priest functioning at its peak. This warrior-priest is known only as Bodin, and is rumored to have extraordinary telepathic powers.

MACO Platoon

Starbase 25 has assigned to it a Platoon of MACOs (Military Assault Command Officers – Basically Space Marines) for all manner of missions requiring ground forces or professionally trained boarders.

Romulan Dissinent Invasion

In 2382 a Romulan Dissinent military power attempted to invade Starbase 25 in the hopes of gaining a foothold in Federation space. The invasion attempt was arrested. Further information is classified.

The Murtaw

In 2382, the USS Washington encountered an advanced species known only as the Murtaw. The species, strongly resembling humans in appearance and social structure, had highly developed metallurgical knowledge. As a result, the hulls of their vessels are 100 times stronger than any Federation alloy. Overtures of peace were made after the most recent contact with the Murtaw. Details of said contact are classified.
