Chapter 4
"Lance!" Sheryl called down the hallway. "Did you find her?"
"No. No one has seen her. I don't know where else she could be." Lance said, running a worried hand through his short, spiked blonde hair.
"Maybe Justin has found her. I haven't seen him either." Sheryl explained to him. She saw the worried look in his eyes at the mention of Justin.
"I hope he hasn't had another attack." Lance said, the worry seeping into his voice.
"Is it really that bad?" Sheryl asked, concerned about her new acquaintance and her sister. She could tell that the guys cared a lot about their friend and she hoped that he was all right.
"Yea, it has been lately. He was doing so good. He hadn't had an attack in a couple of months and he was even eager to get back in the studio. Then yesterday, he heard one of our songs on the radio and freaked. Me, JC, and Joey were out of town and Chris was at work. Justin drove there and that is where Joey, JC, and I caught up with them. Then we went to the studio and he wanted to do it on his own. He hasn't been able to walk in the building since it all started." Lance explained, shaking his head. Sheryl knew that that wasn't a good thing.
"Yesterday, when I came here and went to press in my keycode for the back door. I just couldn't do it. I tried three or four times and I just couldn't bring myself to do it. I got really mad and started talking to myself. I think that the guys thought that I had snapped. Finally, I got so pissed off that I made myself do it. I guess that is a good thing, and today I didn't have any problems. Until you guys showed up." Justin told her looking at her. He laughed at the hurt expression on her face. "I didn't mean it like that. I just meant that when we came into the room and you were passed out it reminded me of the concerts and meet and greets where the girls were passing out from just talking to us. I freaked. I had to run to the bathroom and throw up. I guess it was too much for me and then when you started hyperventilating I guess I just started right along with you. I don't even know why." Justin said laughing at himself.
"How did all of this start in the first place?" Sheena asked, interested in what caused her favorite group to stop performing and what had caused this young man to put his dream on hold.
"I don't know really. I think I put too much pressure on myself and it got to me after a while. That is what the doctor is telling me anyway. If you were going to be here longer, I would recommend that you see him. He is really good and easy to talk to. I really like him, but you are easy to talk to and so much prettier too." Justin said, then blushed when he realized what he had said.
"The Justin Timberlake, blushing because of a flattering comment to a girl. Why, will wonders never cease?" Sheena said, laughing.
"I just haven't said or done anything like that in a while. I am surprising myself today." Justin said, laughing with her. "You know we have been in here for over an hour and I am sure the others are getting worried. We should get back, but I really don't want to. I just want to sit here and talk to you. You make it so easy." Justin said, squeezing her hand again.
"I know how you feel, but you are right we should get back. I have one little boy in there that would probably get joy out of throwing daggers at your head if he knew you were taking up my time instead of him." Sheena said laughing. Justin pulled the door open and got out. He turned to help her out of the van.
"Let me guess Tommy?" Justin said, before closing the door.
"It's that obvious, huh? I don't know why but he has this protectiveness over me. He doesn't even like for my boss to talk to me." Sheena laughed again as they started across the parking lot.
"He has a crush on you. I can understand that." Justin said, then slapped his mouth closed, praying that she hadn't heard that last statement. She hadn't or either she didn't say anything about it.
"I can't see how he could have a crush on me. I am like six years older than he is." Sheena said, finding it hard to believe.
"Well think about it. A lot of little boys get crushes on their teachers and they are years and years apart in age. You aren't that much older than he is. It does make snese, in the fact that you are there for him and you care about him. He can talk to you and know that you aren't going to laugh at him or make fun of him. It is pretty elementary my dear Watson." Justin said, in a thick British accent. Sheena laughed.
"Well, if that is what it is, and I doubt it, then what am I supposed to do about it?" She asked him seriously as they stepped into the building.
"I have not clue. I don't think I ever got over my sixth grade teacher. But alas that romance was cut short by the MMC." Justin said, in a mock tone of nostalgia. Sheena laughed at him again. He had a charm about him, even in his current state of shyness and low self-esteem that made her laugh.
Sheryl and Lance turned when they heard laughter coming from the other end of the hallway. They listened for a moment until they recognized it. They had been looking for their missing people again and had just about given up. They looked at each other and then ran for the other end of the hallway, where they tried to stop but because of the slick floor slid into the wall. Sheryl fell hard up against Lance who hit the wall with his shoulder. Then both fell to the ground, groaning in pain.
"Sheryl, what on earth are you doing? Where is the fire?" Sheena asked, trying to stifle a laugh at the two sprawled out on the floor.
"Lance, I know your mother taught you not to run in doors. Especially as clumsy as you are." Justin said, nearly dying from the laughter that wanted to escape. When the two realized that the fallen people were ok, they couldn't contain their laughter anymore. They doubled over with laughter, holding on to each other for support. Lance noticed why he and Sheryl had fallen. The floor was wet from being mopped. He turned to Sheryl and saw that she was having the same thought that he was. He reached out and grabbed Justin's leg as Sheryl did the same to her sister. They tugged and Justin and Sheena fell to the floor in a heap. They yelped in pain as they hit the floor, sprawled on top of each other and struggling to untangle themselves. Now it was Sheryl and Lance's turn to laugh. The fall hadn't dampened Justin and Sheena's laughter though and they continued to laugh, not only at Lance and Sheryl but at themselves.
"What in the world is going on out here?" JC asked, coming around the corner, with Chris and Joey right behind him. He stopped and looked down at the four people on the floor, all of who were laughing by this time.
"We were wondering where you all had gotten to. Are you having a party and you didn't invite us?" Chris asked, a hurt expression on his face.
"Now Chris, what good would a party be with out the infamous Kirkpatrick as the entertainment?" Sheena asked, accepting Joey's hand to help her up. "Thank you, Mr. Fatone." Sheena said, giving him a kiss on the cheek, he then blushed and helped Justin to his feet.
"I think you were making fun of me, but I am going to let it slide since you are new around here. Just remember, that is your one and the rest get payback." Chris said, holding up his pointer finger to emphasize his point.
"Justin, should I be scared?" Sheena turned to her newfound confidant and asked with mock fright.
"Not really, he is all bark and no bite. Well, actually he only bites on occasion, so you might want to think about shaking to make him feel better anyway." Justin said, causing the others in the hall to laugh. Chris stood to the side and pouted.
"Oh, Chris, it will be ok. I will let you bite me if I get really drunk." Sheryl said, throwing an arm over his shoulder. His eyes lit up.
"Can we go clubbing now?" He asked excitedly. The rest of the group rolled their eyes at him and turned to one another. Then realization hit the two girls.
"Where are the kids? Who is watching them?" Sheena asked, looking around at the five guys that were standing in front of her.
"Don't worry, Sadie. Our guys took them to lunch in the cafeteria. They are fine. They even get to have ice cream for desert." JC said, a small smile playing on his lips. Sheena was about to ask about the smile but soon found the answer.
"What?! The kids get ice cream? I didn't even know we had ice cream. Why don't I get to have ice cream?" Chris asked, bouncing around excitedly, popping questions off at ninety miles and hour.
"Do you have to ask, Christopher?" Lance said, putting his hand on the older friend's shoulder to stop the incessant bouncing around.
"Why don't we go to the lounge and sit. We can talk there better and more comfortably." Joey added to the group discussion. After hearing six agreements he led the group to the lounge that they had been in before. Sheena and Sheryl sat on the same couch that Sheena had been lying on earlier, sandwiched between Justin on Sheena's side and Lance on Sheryl's. Joey sat down on the floor across the room from them and Chris and JC sat in the chairs on either side of him.
"So tell us about yourselves. You know, your family, friends, boyfriends, pets. Things like that." Joey said, lounging on the floor. Four voices rang out.
"Joey!"
"What?"
"We know where this line of questioning can lead and don't think we didn't hear the boyfriend part. It isn't any of our business." Lance said, looking at the girls with an apologetic look.
"It's all right. Most of our lives are open books. Have to be working with the kids. They can't trust telling you their secrets if you won't tell yours." Sheryl said, looking at the faces that were staring at her. "What?"
"Nothing really. It is just that you are all so willing to talk about yourselves. It is just a little.no offensebut weird." Chris said, looking interested in what they had to say.
"Well, I guess we have always been like that. Not to mention when you work with a bunch of curious kids, you get used to it." Sheena said, shrugging her shoulders as if she talked about her entire life everyday.
"Oh, so you have worked with Joey and Chris before?" Lance said, getting a few laughs and slaps on the head for his comment.
"Don't hit the smart one. You need all of the brains in this group that you can get." Sheryl defended, swatting at Chris and Joey. Lance turned to them and stuck his tongue out at them. "Don't make me take it back, Lance." Sheryl warned, getting laughs from the rest of the group while Lance pouted.
"Anyway, back to the original line of questioning. Tell us about yourselves." Justin said, getting everyone back to the original conversation.
"Well, for me there really isn't much to tell. I am twenty-one years old. I have lived with my sister my entire life. Don't know what I would do with out her." Sheryl said, putting an arm around Sheena.
"Probably not worry as much." Sheena mumbled, and yelped when Sheryl squeezed her really hard. The guys laughed.
"Anyway, we moved her about a year ago, from North Carolina. We started working with the kids and we love it. I don't have a boyfriend right now. Just broke up with him actually. That is about it. Nothing too interesting there." Sheryl finished shrugging her shoulders. Everyone turned their attention to Sheena.
"Ok I guess that means its my turn now, huh? Well, where to begin. Let's see, I started out as twinkle in my father's eye during the summer of '81." Sheena started, then turned to the others, giggling. "Oh, I guess you didn't literally mean MY LIFE. Ok so lets see what else there is to say. I am 19. Graduated from high school early, got a few classes in at college, before we moved down here. I plan on going back to school, but I haven't had the time or the money yet. I haven't had a boyfriend in a really long time. Actually now that I think of it, I can't even remember the last time I had a boyfriend. I am a complete raving lunatic. Been committed, the works." Sheena was interrupted by her sister.
"Sheena." Sheryl warned her.
"Oh don't start. Didn't we already get into this earlier. They already know about it so what difference does it make. Besides the fact that you would be embarrassed to have people know that you sweet innocent little sister has a dark secret to hide, like the fact that she is complete and total nutcase. Sorry, oopps, I think I let it slip." Sheena said, rolling her eyes and being overly dramatic the entire time that she talked. The guys were feeling extremely uncomfortable being caught in the middle of the family discussion.
"Sadie, I get so sick of you making jokes about it. Why don't you just admit that it upsets you and deal with it. Don't hide behind your jokes and smart-assed comments. God, grow up all ready." Sheryl said exasperatedly.
"Well, since I obviously act like a child and you seem to want to treat me as one, why don't I just go hang out with them." Sheena said, getting up and leaving the room, slamming the door behind her. Sheryl was nearly in tears when the group looked back to her.
"We are really sorry. We didn't realize" JC said, trailing off for lack of anything to say, but feeling uncomfortable in the silence.
"No, don't worry about it. She has a lot on her mind and I have a lot on my mind and I just don't know what we are going to do." Sheryl said, rubbing her face in her hands.
"Don't know what to do about what?" Lance asked, concerned for their new friend.
"Sheena. She needs to go back to a doctor but we don't have the money and I know she won't ask our parents for help. I don't know what we are going to do. I can't believe that we have spilled all of this out in front of strangers when we haven't even talked about it really. I am so sorry you guys have gotten caught up in the middle of this for the second time today." Sheryl apologized, her voice shakey and full of concern.
"Don't worry about it. That's what friends are for right. I mean I hope that we can all be friends. I know that I would love to be friends with those little tikes out there and they sure do seem to like you guys." Joey said, trying to bring a happy note to the room.
"Yea, I don't know why, but they do like us. Especially Sadie. They love her to death. She gets calls at all times of the night, from the little ones who have nightmares or something. She talks them down and back to sleep. Sometimes she can be so laid back and care free and then others she acts like she is three. Then, sometimes she acts like she is thirty, or she is so stubborn that you want to throw her through a brick wall." Sheryl said, laughing at the now tempting thought.
"She sounds like all of us rolled into one. JC, serious, Lance, laid back, Justin stubborn and Chris, three." Joey said, laughing at his analogy.
"I have to ask. Is she a flirt or party animal?" Lance questioned.
"Yea sometimes." Sheryl answered, not sure why he wanted to know.
"There you go, Joey. You're in there too. Feel better now?" Lance asked, turning to his friend and hitting him in the knee. "Now your analogy really works." The group laughed.
"Well, I guess we had better get back to the kids and get them to the hotel. We still have to figure out how the sleeping arrangements are going to work. Ten kids and two supposedly adults just don't even out with two beds per room." Sheryl said, standing up and stretching her body, worn out from the travel, scare, excitement, and arguing.
"I am sure can work something out. After you rest up some, maybe we can stop by and talk to the kids, since we didn't get much of a chance to do it today." Chris offered, opening the door for her, as the group filed out of the room.
"I think the kids would like that. I hope Sadie is all right. I don't know how to deal with her when she gets like this, but I guess she is an adult now and she can deal with it however she wants." Sheryl said, sighing as the six walked down the hall.
"She'll be fine. If we have anything to do with it, you guys won't even think of it while you are here, and the way Lou was talking earlier, we are going to have a lot to do with it." JC said, putting an arm around her shoulders for a small friendly hug.
"Thanks guys. I never thought teen heartthrobs would be so nice. And a boy band none the less." Sheryl said, laughing and then shriek when she was lifted over Joey's shoulder.
"I got your boy band right her, Girlie." He said, spinning her around as they made their way down the hall.
"Uh, Joey the kids are still in the cafeteria, not the studio." Lance corrected him as he made his way past the cafeteria and further down the hall.
"Oh, right. Sorry got a little carried away there for a second." Joey said, grinning. He placed Sheryl back on the ground and opened the door to the cafeteria for her, while Chris tried to keep her dizziness from causing her to fall on her face.
"We wouldn't love you any other way Joey." Sheryl said, sarcastically, walking through the door but stopping when she looked around at the kids who had formed a circle around something, or someone. "Not again." Sheryl groaned.
The guys didn't know if this was good or bad.. "Not what again?" Justin asked, almost afraid of the answer. Sheryl didn't answer him just casually walked up to the quiet group of kids and leaned forward to see her sister. There sat Sheena in the middle of the group. Next to her was Mike. The sat there with tubs of chocolate pudding in front of each one.
"What in the world are they doing?" Chris asked a confused and disgusted look on his face.
"Sadie likes to challenge people to an eating contest. She prides herself on being able to eat A LOT of anything REALLY fast." Sheryl explained, just before the children exploded into applause. Sheena held up her empty container, smiling cheerfully at the group, her face covered in chocolate, like a little kid. Mike sat next to her, a shocked look on his face.
"I can't believe it. I can beat the all mighty Justin Timberlake and Joey Fatone, and I can't beat this little, hundred and nothing female. The planets must be out of alignment or something." Mike said, making excuses for his loss.
"Face it man, you lost. Deal with it." Justin said, patting his friend on the shoulder.
"How in the world do you eat like that and manage to weigh nothing?" Chris asked, the confused and disgusted look still on his face.
"Fast metabolism and non stop action. Do you guys have like a room with mats or anything. I think I have had too much sugar. The kids and I want to wrestle." Sadie asked, jumping up and down in place. The kids around her were beaming happily and waiting for the answer from the guys.
"Uh, there is a work out room that has a few mats. The bodyguards use it to work out when they are around. I guess you could use that." JC said, looking at her weirdly.
"What is up with her?" Lance whispered his question to Sheryl.
"Like she said. She has had too much sugar. She isn't supposed to have a lot of sugar. It makes her sleepy and sick to her stomach after about an hour or so, but she never listens." Sheryl said, laughing as Sheena reached over and picked two of the smaller children up and tuck one under each of her arms and took the directions to the room from JC. After getting the directions, she took off, racing the other children to the room where they would hold their wrestling match. "Now do you see why they love her so much. I get to be the mother and she gets to be the best friend?" Sheryl asked, laughing as Joey, Justin, and Chris ran out of the room to join the match.
"Well, since we are still on lunch for another hour, I guess we should go watch. If I know the guys, and I do, they will have a wrestling match of their own." Lance told her as the three left the room and walked down the hall to the small gym. As they neared the door they could hear the cheers of the children as they rooted for their preferred victor.
Walking up to the opened door, the three peaked in and noticed the group circling the commotion again. Stepping closer, Joey and Justin could be seen, standing with all ten children, watching the wrestling match that was occurring before them.
"I think that I know where Chris is." Lance called to Sheryl over the noise of the children and singers. Sheryl laughed and motioned for JC and Lance to lean closer so that she could tell them something with out shouting. When they obliged, she stifled a laugh.
"Did I forget to mention that Sadie studied karate since she was seven and that she once took down the captain of the high school wrestling team, who was also the state champ?" Sheryl asked, grinning mischievously as the two guys and herself quickly made their way to the front of the circle to witness the down fall of one elder man.
"I am going to take you down, Girl. Don't whine to me when I beat the crap out of you." Chris said, as he tried to work his way away from the hold that Sheena had on him.
"Old Man, being in the position that you are in, I wouldn't be making threats if I were you. Do you want to have kids in the future?" Sadie asked, straddling his torso as he lay on his stomach. "Just say it and all of this torture will end."
"Never! I can take you." Chris managed to say while gasping for breath through her chokehold.
"Do you plan on making that move soon. I don't think you can handle me. I might be too much for your too old heart. I wouldn't want to be the cause of the heart attack that ended the pop band of the millenium." Sheena teased trying to egg him on.
"Joey man, I can't take it anymore. I gotta help him." Justin said looking at his friend sympathetically.
"Do what you feel you have to. Just tell me what you want me to say at your funeral. Oh, and it was really nice knowing you." Joey said, laughing as Justin slowly approached the squabbling pair on the floor. He was behind Sheena so she didn't know that he was there. He motioned for the kids to not say anything and smiled at Sheryl and his other band mates before he made his move.
Before Sheena knew what was happening, she was being lifted off of Chris and spun around, the strong arms of a man holding her from behind.
"What the?" Sheena said, startled.
"I know the best defense in the world. The fine oriental art of.TICKLING!" Justin yelled, throwing her on the mat and beginning to tickle her. Sheena was laughing so hard that she could barely breath. He tickled her until she turned blue and couldn't move then he stopped and got a very devilish look on his face. That worried Sheena. While Chris helped Justin to pin her down so that she couldn't move, Justin turned his head over his shoulder and looked at the kids. He motioned with his hand for them to come closer.
"Justin, what are you doing?" Sheena asked, giving up the struggle to sit up. The look in his eyes was worrying her.
"You guys like her right?" Justin asked, getting nods from the group of children. "You like to hear her laugh and have fun right?" Justin asked receiving another round of nods.
"Justin don't you dare." Sheena said, not liking what she knew he was about to do.
"Then why don't you help me out. Everyone tickle Sadie!" Justin yelled. He began to tickle her again as the kids surrounded her and began to tickle her. She was laughing hysterically and begging them to stop but they weren't hearing her.
"You know what, guys? I can't just stand here and watch this. I think I have to do something." Sheryl said, walking up to the group on the floor, where her sister was being tickle tortured. Surprising everyone, she dove into the group and started tickling her sister as well.
"I kinda feel bad for her JC. I mean, everyone has ganged up on poor little Sadie. Shouldn't we do something?" Lance asked, looking at his older friend.
"You know what, Lance? I think you are right. We should do something." JC said, smiling evilly at his friend. They both nodded to each other and turned to the group. Heading over to the group and worked their way inside.
"Hey, I think that it is Justin and Chris's turn. They look like they could use some laughs. Don't forget about Joey and Sheryl either. They could use some too." Lance yelled into the group and immediately the children switched from Sheena to the other for adults in the pack. Lance and JC reached down and grabbed Sheena up from the floor. Out of breath and still laughing, she allowed them to help her out of the herd of children. They stood by listening to the laughs and shouts from the children and the begging from her previous conspirators.
"I think that they are having too much fun. Why don't we leave them to it?" Sheena suggested. "What do you say we go out side and see what your body guards are up to?" Sheena offered.
"I think that that is a wonderful idea, Ms. Evans. Allow us." JC said, as he and Lance extended their elbows to her. She took both and let them lead her out of the room as they laughed at the tangle of bodies squirming on the floor.
