My Kulliyyah in IIUM

The Kulliyyah of Science, began its operations in the year 2002. It offers studies in various pure and applied branches of the natural sciences.
The Kulliyyah of Science will share with other kulliyyahs, one of the most tastefully designed academic campuses in the world. The architecture of IIUM's campus is inspired by both Islamic traditions and modern ideas of utility. The campus it occupies lie within a forested area that is every nature lover's dream.
Department
Presently, there are three departments :

Department of Biotechnology
Department of Biomedical Science
Department of Computational and Theoretical Sciences
In the second phase of its development, two more departments will be established, namely :
Department of Physical Sciences
Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies
Facilities:
The kulliyyah has the most up-to-date and comprehensive facilities and equipment to cater to students' needs. The resource centre, laboratories and workshop are tailored for all its different requirements with advanced and specialised instruments to aid the learning process.
Undergraduate Programmes :

1)Bachelor of Biomedical Science
2)Bachelor of Biotechnology
3)Bachelor of Mathematical Science
4)Postgraduate Programmes
5)Doctor of Philosophy
6)Master of Science
7)Master of Health Science
What is Biomedic?
Biomedical science is a continually changing, dynamic profession with long term career prospects including managment, research, education and specialised laboratory work.In biomedic we study life processes to gain an understanding on of health and the principle of diseases.

Subjects covered are broadly similiar to the pre-clinical components of a medical programme with the addition of advance subjects such as molecular biology, radiobiology, ergonomics, nutritional biochemistry and effects of industrial activities upon our health and the enviroment.

Why are Animals Used in Biomedical Research?

The use of animals in some types of research is essential to the development of new and more effective methods for diagnosing and treating diseases that affect both humans and animals. Scientists use animals to learn more about health problems, and to assure the safety of new medical treatments. Medical researchers need to understand health problems before they can develop ways to treat them. Some diseases and health problems involve processes that can only be studied in living organisms. Animals are necessary to medical research because it is impractical or unethical to use humans.

Animals make good research subjects for a variety of reasons. Animals are biologically similar to humans. They are susceptible to many of the same health problems, and they have short life-cycles so they can easily be studied throughout their whole life-span or across several generations. In addition, scientists can easily control the environment around animals (diet, temperature, lighting), which would be difficult to do with people. Finally, a primary reason why animals are used is that most people feel it would be wrong to deliberately expose human beings to health risks in order to observe the course of a disease.
