By Helmut Schmidt The Forum - 11/28/2001 The design process for Fargo’s North High School renovation is almost finished. The project, expected to cost about $13 million when completed, will add about 48,000 square feet of classroom space, said Dan Huffman, assistant superintendent for business services. Huffman, who gave an update on the project to the School Board Tuesday, said 85,000 square feet will be refurbished. Huffman said the building will get a new library, auditorium, theater, orchestra, choir and band rooms, video production studio and expanded computer lab. Administrative offices will be relocated, too, he said. Huffman said the design process will be finished in the next two weeks. He said bid documents and working drawings will be released to contractors in the next six to eight weeks.
Construction would be completed by the fall of 2003, he said. Huffman told the board that the design process with architect Foss Associates began 18 months ago and follow-up meetings with the staff at North are being completed. The project’s budget includes construction costs, architect and engineering fees, asbestos abatement, construction management and furniture, furnishings and equipment. The project was approved by the School Board in 1997 with the remodeling and additions to South High. Part of the project, improvement of North’s athletic facilities, including football, baseball and soccer fields, and tennis courts has been completed, Huffman said. Another major school district project on the north side, the renovation and additions at Ben Franklin Junior High, is expected to be nearly complete when school opens in fall 2002, Huffman said.
