Palaeochrysophanus hippothoe, Lycaena hippothoe – Purple-edged Copper (Lycaenidae)

Appearance: The male of this delightful species carries every colour of the rainbow on his wings. The upper wings are dark orangey red or red, with wide bluish purple streaks on the hind wing. The dark-rimmed wings have a bright purple sheen that looks spectacular in sunlight. The female looks much less colourful with predominantly brown wings, with dots on the forewing and a red belt in the lower hind wing. The undersides of the wings are greyish-brown with a touch of orange, and with black spots. Purple-edged Copper has a wingspan varying from 32 to 38 mm.

Geographical distribution/ habitat: The cool and damp regions of Europe and Asia; absent from Britain, North and West of France, South of Spain. In the South of Europe only in mountainous areas, because prefers cool climates. Frequents flowery meadows in damp areas.

Host plants: Sorrel (Rumex).

Food plants: Various wildflowers. Frequents flowery meadows in damp areas.

Flight time: From June to July. One generation per year.

Other: Hibernates as a caterpillar.
