Brenthis ino – Lesser Marbled Fritillary (Nymphalidae)

Appearance: This delightful butterfly has fairly rounded orange wings with black spotting all over. Like most Fritillaries, Lesser Marbled Fritillary can be best identified by the undersides of her wings. On the underside of the hindwing a purple band can be found running across the wing along with dark round spots. The wingspan of this butterfly is approximately 40mm.

Geographical distribution/ habitat: Europe and Asia. Widely distributed in North, Central, and Southeast of Europe, lacking Britain. The typical habitats of Brenthis ino include damp woodlands and marshlands, riverbanks and lakesides, but it may occasionally frequent drier ground.

Host plant: The usual host plant of the caterpillar is Meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria) but sometimes also Raspberry and Stone Bramble (Rubus spp.).

Food plants: Fond of various wildflowers, especially Meadowsweet, Knapweed and Thistles. Shows interest also on yellow Buttercups.

Flight time: Brenthis ino is on the wing from the end of June to August, in one generation.

Other: Hibernates as an egg inside which the caterpillar is fully developed.
