Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world, and the total Muslim population of the world is well over one billion (around 20% of the world's population).
30% of Muslims live in the Indian sub-continent, 20% in sub-Saharan Africa, 18% in the Arab regions (including North Africa), 17% in south-east Asia (including Indonesia, the largest Muslim country), 10% in the former Soviet Union and China, and 10% in Turkey, Iran and Afghanistan.
There are sizeable minorities in almost every other part of the world, with around 6 million Muslims living in North America and around 2 million in the United Kingdom.
A map showing the proportions of people following Islam in each country is shown in the map on the right (click on the image to open an enlarged map).
