Labor Disputes
In 2002, the trade union led more than 15
strikes and followed up tens of litigations in the Workers’
Court and succeeded to secure hundreds of thousands of
dollars for the workers. Hundreds of individual cases were
amicably solved. Many disagreements related to Chinese,
Indian and Pakistani workers were settled, and the trade
union could preserve their rights and secure their travel
back to their countries.
As for this year 2003, many disputes between
the workers represented by the trade union and each of:
· Al- Haramain Company
This company has not paid the salaries of
the workers (the Jordanians as well as the foreigners) for
more than four months. The company's owner escaped from the
country without paying to any of them. He asked some lawyers
to negotiate the workers to accept 50% of their rights. The
trade union visited the factory many times, and discussed
the matter with all the concerned parties and contacted the
owner of the factory by many ways trying to reach a solution
to this dilemma but he has never responded. The problem is
still standing out there while the owner of the factory is
sleeping at his home in India.
· Future Company
This company is owned by a Pakistani guy
called Moh'd Altaf. About 650 workers worked for his
company, the are of Jordanians and other nationalities. The
same scenario repeats itself always, the owner of the
company escapes from Jordan along with his manaers without
notifying the government, leaving the workers unpaid for
four months. He also escaped from his commitments to Social
Security Corporation and many other debts on him for some
Jordanian companies. More than 280 cases were brought to
court without any use, because there is no other party to
stand in front of the judge. The same scenario also happened
with Manhattan Company last year, when the owners left the
workers without paying their salaries for months. 350 cases
are now in the court and we know very well that this can
never make any difference. This company was more
professional than other thieves; it could borrow some
million dollars from Jordanian Banks and escape from the
country.
· Millennium Company
There are continuous disputes between
workers and the management of this company because of the
delay in paying the salaries on time. Delay in paying varies
between 2-3 months usually. 75 Jordanians as well as
foreigners work for this company. Now, 50% of them left the
work. Many strikes took place to pressure on the company's
owner. The ministry of labor interfered to support the trade
union, it put fines and penalties on this company reached
thousands of Jordan Dinars, because the company does not pay
for the workers and does not issue work permissions for the
foreigners. But these discrepancies are still there, and the
trade union is doing its best to find away out of such
problems.
· The United Company for Textile and
Clothing
It is a Jordanian company that has always
disputes with workers because of the delay in paying the
workers' salaries on time. Many cases were brought to the
court of the wages authority. And the situation is still
unsolved.
· The Textile and Clothing Company
It’s a Jordanian company. This company did
not pay the salaries of their workers either who are still
in their jobs or those who were shown the door. The rights
of the workers on this company is about half million Jordan
Dinars. A resolution issued by the court of wages authority
obliges the company to pay all the rights of the workers.
This decision is waiting to be out into effect because of
the long procedures applied in such cases. It's astonishing
how patient some workers, some of them has not received any
money for more than one year and a half. Bad management of
this company caused the big losses and debts on it though it
was the only company of its kind in the near past. The debt
on it is around 21 million JDs while the capital of this
company is about 5 million JDs. The workers just wonder
where is the Ministry of Labor?
