The card game in Final Fantasy VIII, Triple Triad, is very similer to dominos. You can challenge nearly any NPC in the game by using the Square button. You must have five or more cards first before you can challenge then and the easiest way of getting them is talking to the man in Balamb Garden on the second floor next to the elevator. You can also recieve cards be defeating enemies or by using the Card ability on a weakened monster.
CARD RULES
You and your opponent each start with 5 cards each. You take it in turn to place your cards one at a time on a 3X3 grid called the Battle Area. Each card represents a point and you can flip over your opponents cards under certain conditions. Each card has 4 numbers which represent a side on the card. If you place a card beside your opponents card and the value of your card ( using the side adjacent to your opponents card ) is higher than your opponents, than his card is flipped and the point goes to you. The game ends when all 9 tiles have been used and the winner is the one with the most points. There are different variations of rules which all depend on which region you are playing in. Below is a list of all the different rules you can use.
CARDS
PLAYING RULE
DESCRIPTION
Same Plus Combo Same Wall Elemental Open Random Sudden Death
A player turns over cards that have the same number values adjacent to at least two of the sides of the card he plays. This has the Combo effect. A player turns over cards that add up to the same number as at least two adjacent sides of the card he plays. This has the Combo effect. Cards turned over by the 'Same' or 'Plus' rules also turn over adjacent cards that have a lower value than the card turned over in a chain reaction. This rule uses the frame of the Battle Area as a card side when using the 'Same' rule. The frame has an 'A' value on all sides. This adds random elemental properties to tiles in the Battle Area. If the card element matches that of the tiles, the card values increase by 1. All cards are face up which enables you to see your opponents cards allowing you to plan your moves ahead. This also applies to the opponent. Cards are choson randomly from each players deck. You have no influence over which cards you use which means you could end up with weak cards. If the match ends in a draw you must continue playing until there is a winner. You start with the cards that you had at the end of the game.
At the end of the game the winner gets to choose at least one card from their opponents deck. However, s/he can only choose a card that they flipped by the end of the game. There are four different trade rules that can be used.
TRADE RULE
DESCRIPTION
One Direct Diff All
This is the basic trade rule. The winner chooses one card from the loser. You recieve cards that you flipped over during the game but your opponent gets any cards they flipped over as well. The winner takes the number of cards by which s/he won by from the loser. The winner takes all of the losers cards.
