"I loved you like a brother!" Were the echoing words, each lilting syllable slamming through my heart. Like a brother. Only like a brother. That's all it had ever been. I felt my heart rip in two, through the searing pain of my burning flesh and bleeding limbs, I felt my heart splinter into a thousand pieces. I cried out, pain thick in my throat so that all I could manage was a strangled cry.
You turned away from me, turned away and left me to die. Never so much as a pause in your movements, or a hesitation, it had always been like that, during training, during missions. I watched you walk away from me, cloak billowing out behind you. I watched you desert me, you, the one man I had thought loved me. The one man I had loved.
And there did my soul die, right there, on the ashen earth by the sizzling lava. There with my blood thick in my lungs, the smell of my own burning flesh reeking in my nostrils. With my limbs forgotten and lost, with my beautiful features unrecognizable. There did you leave me, and there did I die.
