Chapter Five

When Sarah arrived, there was no real commotion. She was just like any other girl you'd see walking down the street with her soft brown hair floating gently above her shoulders and two vague blue eyes that sparkled under sunlight and glowed something fierce after dusk. Her general presence in the room did, however, turn heads, and whispers were soon furtively exchanged that the girl stepping towards the table with the blond was enchanted. A few just thought she was pretty, but Seifer knew that she made herself purposely look like that to draw attention as she entered the room.

Sarah had the ability to change her form--one day an old lady talking a morning scroll, the next a five year old playing hopscotch on the sidewalk. No one knew her true form, except maybe herself. Perhaps it wasn't something she was specifically proud of to make her keep switching skins. Usually, she'd change her appearance according to the occasion, and, at this time, she wanted somewhat of a grand entrance where she'd be noticed from whichever table in the room, but not dramatically so.

"Hello, Seifer," Sarah said to him as she took a seat across from him. Her voice was soft and tender like a summer melody, almost seducing, but Seifer knew its tone quality could be quickly transitioned to something fierce whenever provoked. Seifer merely smiled at her and nodded his head slightly, his eyes fixed across the room at Irvine.

"Hey there..." Seifer muttered out of the corner of his mouth. "Look, I have to act all nice and moral right now because Mr. Kinneas is watching over me. I know he'd expect me to do anything bad...it's the only reason why he came." Sarah tried to ignore him as she controlled her temper. She pulled the ingeniously folded napkin off the table and spread it out across her lap. Across her face, she held a secret little scowl; she didn't come here to have her purpose interrupted by any "Mr. Kinneas" or any paranoid Seifer.

"I don't know what the hell you're talking about, but you better shut up about it and start discussing the plan with me immediately before I get angry, Seifer Almasy," Sarah muttered through a forced a smile. She was confused, and in turn, that meant she was angry because she did not, of all things, enjoy being confused in any shape or manner. Sarah had barely an patience since, well usually, whatever she wanted, she got.

"Yeah, I know. I mean... Irvine just thinks I'm doing bad here," Seifer attempted to explain, but then sighed. "Ah, never mind it all." He gave up on the whole explanation. Meanwhile, from the other table, Sarah had caught Irvine's ever-seeking eye and he was already making his way across the room to her. As soon as he took his position standing next to her, she turned to him, flashing him a rather sweet smile.

"Well, hyello, Seifer," Irvine tipped his cowboy hat in his direction. "Who might this lovely little lady be?" Seifer sighed; he knew it--Irvine had his eyes on the prize and he wouldn't easily give it up for being such a ladies' man. Seifer opened his mouth to disagree with the situation, but Sarah placed a gentle hand on his shoulder on her way to stand up, making him suddenly freeze. No seriously, I mean he couldn't move a single muscle, joint, or bone in his body. Damn you, Sarah, he thought.

"And who, may I ask, are you?" Sarah asked Irvine in her seductive singsong voice. Irvine, more than delighted at her voice smiled and took off his cowboy hat for just an instant to bow and make a presentation. Personally, Sarah enjoyed hearing compliments--in fact, she nearly thrived on them and so she knew that freezing Seifer would prove to her ego's benefit.

"My name is Irvine," Irvine said, nodding his head with a cute little smile on his face. "Irvine Kinneas and I must say it's a pleasure to meet you." Irvine leaned down and kissed the back of her hand. Sarah flashed her eyes.

"So... you're this... Irvine Kinneas," Sarah muttered. "Huh." Irvine smile suddenly dropped to an astonished frown as he realized what had just happened. It wasn't that he'd met his match, but his match had already heard of him--and by the wrong mouth too. She took his hand and almost effortlessly had him thrown across the floor to the other side of the room where Lina rushed to his aid.

"Irvy! What happened, are you okay!?" Lina struggled to pull him up by the arm.

"Love hurts," he replied, his voice fragile as if he were about to cry. Rejected by yet another girl and now asking for attention from Lina. Lina sighed and let go of his arm to leave him for the floor. She should have known that Irvine would do something stupid like flirt with a complete stranger just to see if he could win his own psychologically created game. "Girls," he shrugged as she went back to the table. "They always drop ya...."
