Chapter Five

"It's beautiful," Lina sighed, lying back down and letting thin blades of grass scrape themselves softly against her arms. The sunset was gorgeous--something heavenly you wish you could capture in the palm of your hand or in a little glass bottle as to preserve its beauty for just a little longer. At its climax, the sky was painted a brilliant orange as if someone had cut and pasted out something from a nature magazine. "Hey, Zell... what do you think... it might be like if I was never here?" It was random, but sunsets had a tendency to spur that in people.

"I think I'd kill myself," Zell giggled, plopping down next to her and nestling his face right at the nook of her neck. Lina chuckled and watched as the sunset eased itself into its eminent decline--the most depressing time of the day when all became dark. Lina thought about it, considering his response, but unable to stop wondering.

"Really though... what do you think it'd be like if I had never come here?" she asked again calmly. Zell frowned; why must he push himself to think even of something as dreadful as that? He could barely imagine such a crime, but if Lina wanted a response, then by all means he'd respond.

"I don't know... It'd... I can't even think of what it'd be like--no sorceress by my side all the time...I don't think I'd be able to stand it and so I might as well kill myself," he grinned at Lina. The sunset was just about done, leaving still enough light from the horizon to light the sky. "Lina, I love you. You know that I would die without you." She smiled and kissed him--Lina'd always been somewhat passive when it came to emotions--this was just her way of telling him she felt the same without having to stumble through trying to express it. Zell reached into his pocket and pulled out a little hand sized box. "Hey... you know Lina...my belle, it's been a while now... and I uh... just wanted to give you this..." He held the box out for her.

"Zell!" Lina sat up in surprise; yeah, they were on a date together in the most beautiful place somewhere out in the Galbadia plains only accessible by air, but wasn't that enough? She wasn't of all things expecting this. Zell popped up next to her and she almost jumped on him. "You silly little boy! I can't believe I let you get away with something like this!" He grinned. She took the box and opened it. Sitting inside was a silver necklace, around it hung a silver welded design of a little heart with a rose sitting inside. Lina smiled--Zell knew that her sorceress mark was a rose.

"You like it?" he asked, taking the necklace from the box, fumbling with the hook and slipped it on around her neck.

"I love it, Zell. It's absolutely beautiful. I'd swear my life to it," Lina exclaimed. Zell beamed--what a perfect pick. He wrapped his arms around her waist warmly and kissed her on the cheek. "Zell! I still can't believe you did this."

"Of course I did, belle," he laughed, standing up. "We'd better get back now... It's getting dark." He held a hand out for her and she took it. They headed back for Garden.
