Chapter Eleven

Things started to come quickly after that--the next day, Sadie asked Zell out on a date, and Zell numb, agreed. He'd lost complete control of everything; the only piece of himself he hung onto was the overall consciousness that something was out of place. Sadie, however, appreciated only the feeling that she'd conquered Lina once and for all--Zell was by her side, however monotonous his actions may be, and she was overall satisfied. It never seemed to spark her attention that she'd won nothing at all. Zell's heart was barely there, but whatever still lingered after the spell was devoted to Lina and Lina alone.

Lina woke up in the morning, cold and numb. Her fingers had not defrosted from the day before, but gotten worse and this morning, her entire body just felt so disconnected from her spirit. She sat up and struggled to rub her eyes for her hands felt only like two pieces of lifeless weight from the numb: hard to control, impossible to feel.

Zell and Sadie went on a little trip to Balamb City, as if it'd be any more interesting than a few days before. Sadie dragged Zell along for a little walk around the city and bought some souvenirs in little shopping bags for Zell to hang on to while she kept walking. It was darker than usual that day--the clouds were ominous and the sun was nowhere to be seen, completely hidden. Zell remained completely blind to everything, his mind subtly fighting off this evil that seemed to be blocking off his senses. He wasn't even sure anymore exactly what he was doing for he'd become blind to it. They sat down at a bench in front of the item store--not exactly the most scenic area, but it gave Sadie leeway to make her move.

Lina walked into the bathroom to splash cold water over her face and convince herself that she'd be alright. She turned on the faucet, cupped her hands together to catch some running water, and splashed it against her face, the cold feeling bare against her skin. She sighed, wiped her face off with a towel and consequentially looked up into the mirror. She had no reflection. Lina was thrown back in shock. What the hell? She pressed her palm against the mirror's surface, but it, too, had no reflection. The mirror must be broken... It's that even possible. She examined meticulously every inch of the mirror, running her fingers along its edges--just had to make sure that no cracks had messed up its angle.

Sadie reached down for Zell hand and he had no reaction when she took it in hers.

Lina sighed rubbed her forehead--must be the headache. She looked up and pressed her hand against it again, but the mirror was showing through her hand. Her hand was completely transparent. She screamed, then clasped the other hand over her own mouth. WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON!?

Zell flinched and removed his hand from Sadie's grasp. It was his only triumph for the past few hours--this simple movement too strong for the poison.

Lina hand returned to its normal self, but in the mirror, no reflection would show. Tears streamed her cheeks in fear. Was her whole life coming down to this? She whispered, "Help me, Zell..."
