Helpful Hints for Campus Reps
Since I ended my program in the summer of 2000 I have become a campus rep at my school, Fitchburg State College. The goal of our team is to promote, market, and recruit students for the program at my school. It has been an amazing learning experience, and what I have for you, is what we as a team, have learned, that can hopefully benefit you, and boost your attendance at the next presentation. More to come on this topic in the future
After marketing for 4 semesters, (twice as a visiting school and twice as a host school), we have learned that mass marketing only works so much. This is probably the single most important thing we have learned. Posters, table tents, and sidewalk chalk only go so far. It is up to you the reps to go out and seek out prospects. Visit individual clubs on campus.Give a brief presentation at their next meeting. Create a buzz. We had numerous tables in the campus center but people virtually never come up to us to learn more. We would have to pull them aside and give our spiel.Target in on clubs and other offices around the school. It is so important to reach out to as many people as you can. Classroom presentations are just as important. This not only educates students, but faculty as well. Our recruiter mentioned that faculty support is so important. We will soon be branching out to perhaps present at faculty meetings and other meetings so that the educators can then spread the news to their students. Chalking the sidewalk is another great way to spread the magic around campus. Besides outlining sewer covers, we drew character autographs, castles, sorcer hats, maps to FL, and attraction names everywhere. Make sure your lines are thick, they last longer that way, and watch the weather reports! We sent out a mass phone call to all the campus. Our script basically explained that you can earn college credit for going, that it was a lot of fun, and when the presentation was. Posters are great but nobody reads them. The Mickey logo was very catchy, but think, do you ever stop to read posters? No, that is why it's up to faculty to help out the students. Hold classrooms presentations, speak to faculty, and get them to assist you in any way that they can. Speak with other reps. Attend other presentations. We just came back from the Boston Citywide Presentation and had the chance to speak with a great group of area reps. You can learn a lot from their experiences and what works on their campuses.
