Lesson Plans
The following lesson plan was created by me and is published via Casio.   Feel free to use the lesson, but do remember that it is copyrighted.  I created this lesson for my high school Advanced Drawing class.   My students seem to enjoy it and they learned the differences between drawing from a photograph, and drawing from real life....something that is rather difficult to explain in words. If you do decide to use it in your class, I would love to hear how it turned out for you.

Materials:  Drawing pencils, charcoal, blending sticks, paper (24"x 18"), digital camera, printer, erasers, mirrors (1 for each student).

Procedure: I wrote the instrucitons on the board, as well as gave my students oral instructions.  Each student is to select drawing pencils, charcoal, erasers, and a piece  of paper.  A mirror will be given to each student.  ( I use student drawing mirrors which stand alone and are made of a plastic material ...any mirror wil work, providing it is large enough for the student to view his entire face.)  Students will fold the paper in half, lenghtwise...be sure to crease the fold, open back up.  On 1/2 of the page, students will draw themselves as they see in the miror.  This first drawing will be done in pencil only.

As students are nearing the completion of the first drawing, the teach er will take close, head on shots of each student.  These will be printed out in color, black and white, or both.  The student will receive a photo of himself only.  Now , on the other side of the paper the student will draw himself as in the photo...using the same media (pencil).  This lsson should be done on the same day.

Time:  1 hour to 3 hours...depending on how much detail is desired.

If time allows, use another paper, fold the same way, and sketch student images using charcoal only.  This can be done on colored paper, which gives a nice feel to charcoal drawings.
