Loving Behaviors of Youth
Through the Decades:

[Header]

In the teens if we engaged in any COURTING
the goal was clear; our steps must never falter
along the rose-strew path that led directly
from the settee in the parlor to the altar.

In the 20's wicker porch swings were for SPOONING.
To drown our words, we cranked up the Victrola--
to blare its scratchy music through the window-
or set the player piano to plunk out "Nola."

We called it PITCHING WOO in the star struck 30's.
At the movies watching Fred and Ginger's dances,
we sat squeezed into double seats and wondered
if life could ever match those screen romances.

In the 40's in our Buicks we went NECKING.
In wartime termed it WATCHING SUBMARINE RACES.
we parked in parks, on country roads, in school yards,
till local cops beamed spotlights in our faces!

Those textbooks in the 50's names it PETTING
distinctly qualified as "light" or "heavy".
It took place well beyond our parents' earshot,
in the back seat of a souped-up-Ford or Chevy.

In the 60's LOVE was everywhere they found it-
impulsive acts performed with no auditions.
Our Flower-children children went to Woodstock
and dropped their clothes and all their inhibitions.

In the 70's and 80's BEING ACTIVE,
became--sex-wise--a synonym for scary.
They kept their attitudes and bedroom doors half open,
but health was on their minds, and youth was wary.

Now, looking back, our rumble seats had drawbacks,
and porch-swing spooning never kept our backs warm,
but SCORING was, for us, reserved for hockey-
and MAKING OUT meant filling in a tax form!

Though terms may change, each youthful generation
thinks they invented sex--down to the letter!
How stunned they are to learn that we, their elders,
have seen it all before--and DONE IT BETTER!
