Thanks very much for the message. Great to be updated on
everyone. Just talked to "The Family" (AT'98) on the phone this evening. They're
all excited about the PCT for this spring. At this point it's looking likely
that I'll be out there in their vicinity as well, starting around 4/28, with a
Harpers Ferry to Tye River warm-up hike prior to that. But there's still the
possibility of ending up on the Konnarcock Crew all summer instead. It's a tough
decision.
Headed to the Ruck tomorrow - looking forward to seeing who
will be there. Also, someone in the last update mentioned the Fred/Jester
wedding. Yes, it was quite the event. Very much like an ALDHA Gathering, but
with the added feature of a huge crowd from the crew community, and, of course,
the Highland Games. Take
care,
wc

I have a great pic of Wyoming Skateboarder but have not
scanned it yet. He used the paddle as his hiking pole and said it was also a
great flyswatter. We hiked with him a few days. He was an interesting guy,
a real character, and one of a kind. We enjoyed his company. He started in
February carrying about 80 pounds and there is a story he started with crampons.
He always carried at least 70 pounds. He cooked on 1 pound propane tanks (
he always carried 2 of them)., to whch he screwed a single burner. He reached
Catawba by mid june where he got off the trail according to the grapevine.
Later word was that he had flipped to Katahdin and went through the wilderness
with 100 pounds and 14 days of food.
I hope to scan my picture and put it
on

Hi Folks,Just a few words about our friend WYOMING SKATEBOARDER
My frist meeting with wyoming was great for me but I almost scared him plum half
to death he was heading towards GROUND HOG shelter and I came up behind him
without him knowing I was there I GROWLED he went to reaching for Bear
spray,Knife and what ever else he could. I got a pretty good laugh but I
think Wyoming didn't think it was that funny. Later him came into the
shelter and went straight away to wash his drawers, there were several us there
that night SWEETBLOOD,HOLLEY ,WILLIE B, WALKIN,GROVER, TEDDY
BEAR&CRASEY LEGGS, CHEWEY, MO GLOW and THE CLOAKS. this wasMarch 26 99
I
also passed him comming south near the CROCKERS this wasAugust 26 99 , I think
he surely had a great hike I know his pack may of been heavy but he
always keeps smiling as he hikes along. I'm proud to say he was a partt of
my thru hike memories ALSO KEEP HIKING,AND HAVING FUN,WE DESERVE IT AND LOVE

Hello fannypack, Mr Clean is at the cabin and doing
great. We picked him up in Stratton after doing the Bigelow's. he
lost 20 lbs of body weight and gained 20 lbs of moisture in his pack!!
It's great to have him here for a few days. He's got lots of tales of
adventure, winter hiking is wonderful, wish I had tthe stamina to join
him!!! We do plan on meeting him at Carter Notch when he's in that
area. He's planning to fatten up for a few days then head out.
Happy Hiking!! Honey &

Subject: Update on Otter: Cape Gaspe to Key West
1999
I met Otter in Port Clinton, PA on my southbound
thru-hike this year and felt priviledged to be able to hike the rest of the
trail with him. I finished on Springer November 19 with him and Stink(y) Pak and
several others. There were about 20 other sobo's that finished that same weekend
and there was a celebration for all. Springer was only a milestone on
Otter's
journey for he had many more miles to go but his excitement upon
reaching Springer was no less than anyone else's. If I had had the money, I
would of continued to Florida with him.
A few days after
finishing the AT he set out in a canoe on the Chattahoochee River and paddled
his way to Florida where he would then pick up the Florida Trail and continue on
foot to Key West. After walking through swamps for five days he abandoned this
trail to make his own way down to the keys, following mostly roads and staying
on the west coast. He had the
opportunity to meet lots of great people and
accumulate a sack full of experiences that most never achieve in a lifetime. On
January 22nd there was a celebration in Key West in honor of him and his
fantastic journey. If I am not mistaken, he was given the key to the
city.
Otter is now back in his home state of
Michigan (probably freezing to death after hiking for two months in 70 degree
weather) and plans on going back to work for a while until his next adventure
calls. He certainly deserves our salute and congratulations for his grand
accomplishment.
Miracle

Fannypack you can post this:
About WYO
skateboarder. Some hiker out there has a photo of WYO skateboarder that
must be hilarious! I heard about the photo from an other hiker(i
forget who),anyway...the hiker (that took the picture) came along just in time
to see WYO slip while crossing a creek. So before helping WYO the hiker
takes a photo of WYO flailing and thrashing around in the water
trying to get
off his butt. He was using his paddle to push himself up. It must
have looked like WYO was going to paddle himself down the river!! i
would love to have a copy of that
picture!
Happy Trails y'all

Hi fanny pack and other AT
hikers, This is Tripod 98. I see that Nocona and Bald Eagle are planning
the PCT in April, Well Myself and my wife wont be far behind. We start in
the beginning of May. I am wondering if any other AT98 are planning the
PCT in 2000. Lets say Baltimore Jack? I know that DUDE98 will be starting
about may. I am living in Portland Oregon and loving the northwest, its good to
be home.
I have had the pleasure of staying in touch with HAYDUKE98 and
SQUIRELL98, as they are both out here.
Take care,

Glad to hear that y'all will be out there next
year. Here's the AT98 people I know for sure will be northbound PCT-ers in
2000: The Family, Swiss Miss, Yo Yo, Mountain Dew, Bugbait.
Unfortunately, despite our best efforts to cajole him, Baltimore Jack seems
bound for the AT again though a sure answer has yet to appear.
Hope
to see you on the trail. Andy and I are planning to hitch back for the ADZ
party at Lake Morena on April 28th - 30th. PCT wooooo

Subject: red light in summit
view
Remember you had asked about the red light in the summit view?
Well I had enough sense not to look at night but several people were sending
questions to the observatory about the red light. So one of my tasks was to seek
out and destroy that #$% light. What it was is the power light on the heater
that was in the case the camera was in. I just taped over the light and you
won't be bothered by that again.
The weather was nice yesterday and I
took a walk about a mile down the auto road to take some pictures. By this
morning there was snow and blowing snow with fog but still not too bad outside.
Tonight it is a different story with real wind and zero visibility. the temp is
+7 degrees so it isn't too cold but going to get the precip can in 80+mph wind
is a task.

Subject: Bear
Advisory
Hi folks:
Haven't talked to a few of you
folks for a while and thought I'd get a little silly. Hope this finds all doing
well.
In light of the rising frequency of human/grizzly bear conflicts,
the British Columbia Department of Fish and Wildlife is advising hikers, skiers,
hunters, and fishers to take extra precautions and others to keep alert for
bears while in the field.
We advise that those pursuing activities in the
outdoors wear noisy little bells on their clothing so as not to startle bears
that aren't expecting them. We also advise recreationalists to carry pepper
spray with them in case of an encounter with a bear.
It is also a good
idea to watch out for fresh signs of bear activity. Recreationalists
should recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear
dung:
- Black bear dung is smaller, and contains a lot of berries and
squirrel fur.
- Grizzly bear dung has little bells in it, and smells like
pepper.

Hey
everyone!
I am the official transcriber for Big G. I have had a few
questions lately about the latest journal entries from Glenn. I received a
massive shipment today. Be assured that I work as quickly as I can to get
them posted. I will try to get as many as possible up in the next day or
so. I know we all want to know how Glenn has faired in the ice and
snow. I have not read ahead so do not ask! =)
I like to read for
the first time as I type them. Also, I accidentally overwrote the journal
file with the pics in it.
No biggie, I have a copy. I will add the pics
back in when I get the entire month of Jan done and process the two additional
rolls of film I received today.
That is all for now. I have missed
two phone calls from Glenn now. Has anyone else talked to
him?

from a writer at the Bangor News per a request from the Pie Lady, thanks

------------------------------------------------
Richard Andersen,
president of the International Appalachian Trail board of directors reported
that Scott Galloway completed his trek from Cap Gaspe, Quebec, to Key West,
Fla., on Jan. 22 with a ceremony that
included receiving a key to the city
from Key West Mayor Jimmy Weekley. Galloway is a 27-year-old steeplejack from
Grand Rapids, Mich., who I met last July after he came out of the 100-mile
wilderness into Monson after walking south from Cap Gaspe. We went for desert at
Sidney Pratt's (a.k.a. The Pie Lady), where a couple of hefty slices of pie and
a big scoop of ice cream completed his mid-day refueling.
Galloway
began his epic walk on June 5 last year in his attempt to be the first person to
travel by foot and canoe from north to south on what is now being referred to as
the Eastern Continental Trail. He participated in the dedication ceremony
opening the IAT in Forillon National Park, Cap Gaspe.
The Georgia
Appalachian Trail Club (GATC) hosted a celebration on Springer Mountain on Nov.
20, 1999, welcoming Galloway, trail name "River Otter,'' when he completed of
his through-hike of the International Appalachian Trail (IAT) and the
Appalachian (AT), the first southbound through-hiker of the IAT/SIA.
