Hello Everyone!
I made it! The
monster state Virginia is behind me and now I'm on the home
streach! 450
miles to go, that's just over 100 miles a week and no problem
if the weather
doesn't get too nasty.
Still shooting for the 18th of Dec. to finish and
looking foreward to the
big End of the Trail party! I'm in Damascus
now, a great little town with
everything a hiker needs.
Just got word over
e-mail about a forest fire that is burning around Blood
Mountain in Georgia
and the trail being possibly closed, have to keep my eye
on this
matter....
This trip has been amazing and I know I'll miss it, I'm really
looking
foreward to hitting Springer mountain and seeing my family and
friends that
may come down to Georgia to see me finish, and every day I'm
hoping and
praying, (and I don't pray!) that Meg will be able to join me on
Springer
Mountain as well...time will tell.
Taking today off in town, may
hit the trail
tomorrow....

FannyPack, just an update from Hiawassee... Pirate and Lone
Wolf came
through a couple of days ago with what appears to be the oldest guy
on the
trail this year. Paw Paw signed in at 82 years young. He
apparently missed
this section and Pirate and Lone Wolf hiked back this way
with him. We also
are having a hell of a time with the fire on Blood
Mountain. It was
reported that approximately 3000 acres have been
destroyed and part of the
trail is of course closed. We haven't heard
if it's been contained yet but
the smoke has completely hazed out the entire
N Ga and W North Carolina
Mountains. You can smell the smoke at
times. First reports were that it
was definitely started by humans and
may have been set intentionally. It's
hard for us to comprehend the
idiocy of someone actually doing that but
there are lots of crazies in the
world. We'll update everyone as we hear
more about the trail
condition.
