GOODLUCK AND GOODBYE

(Prequel for Only by My Own Word)

Everything rocked to a halt as he saw Gundam Wing Zero crash and make a big explosion in the ground.  His world stopped rotating.  All he could think of is death.  If he’s dead… he took my life with him…

NOOOO……..!!!

He raced his Gundam towards the crash in a single movement, vaulted out of the cockpit of Deathscythe-Hell before the hatch fully opened.

“Heero…!!!!” All he could think of is calling his name, and hoping that the one he’s looking for would reply for the call.

Nothing..

He could see the cockpit door of the other Gundam was open.  Did he manage to get out after the crash?

But where the hell did he go?

//Flashback//

“Heero. Oi,  Heero.  Don’t scare me like that, man.  Where the hell are you?”

No answer.

Duo walked slowly to the open room that he shared with the Japanese pilot.  Looking wildly for the stoic figure of Heero Yuy.  His violet eyes swept the entire room but still he couldn’t find what he’s searching.

“Heero..”

“Okay, Heero. I get the point here.  You’re still mad aren’t you---for not telling about that stupid mission..” He sighed. “Well, actually---Gyaaah…”

He couldn’t even struggle to get out from the strong hands that shoved him to the corner of the room.  Violet eyes met cobalts, and Duo almost swore that he could see anger in those cold eyes.

“Heero, I didn’t see you coming..”  He grinned nervously, petrified with the look that he received.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”  Exclaimed the Wing pilot.  Strong hands pinned the braided boy to the wall.

“What--?”

“Why didn’t you tell me?! Damn it, Duo.  You should have told me!”  His look changed into something more look like a---worrying eyes.  And a glint of relieve.

“I’m sorry, but it wasn’t exactly a dangerous mission like what ever they told you..” He smiled cheerfully.

He buried his face in Duo's neck and released him from the strong locked in his wrist.  Duo forced himself for not smiling.  It’s not too often The Perfect Soldier gave him his full attention and he decided to savor it as long as it last.

“If you died.. I could never forgive myself…” He heard him say.

“I’m sorry, Heero.  I promised, I would never do it again.  Promise..”  He smiled, sliding his hand to a mass of dark-brown hair and caressed it tenderly.

“Promise?”

“I promise.”

“You never tell a lie?” He lifted his head, looking straight to Duo’s eyes, searching for affirmation.

“You know I don’t.”

“Promise you won’t leave me?”

“I won’t if you won’t.”

//End flashback//

Duo ran through the corridor, searching for the control room.  There’s a massive wreck inside the castle that have been made by Wing Zero and he thought that the building could fall anytime.  After running halfway the castle he spotted light and he could hear people talking and finally a gunshot.  He fastened his run through the room and abruptly stops at the doorframe.

He saw Heero, leaning firmly and safely in Relena’s arms.

He’s alive… and breathing…

His world started rotating again, but…

Heero’s eyes closed with comfort, not trying to hide the pain he felt.

And Duo could see her staring to his beautiful face and smiled, embraced him with the touch that you could only define with the word ‘love’.

People passed him by, one of the guards brought Mariemeia to the medical room with Une trailing behind, she nodded towards Duo, but the boy didn’t respond.

He’s still standing in the doorway, watching for the couple in the middle of the room with hesitation.  And with a swift moved he went to the other direction.

*Promise you won’t leave me?*

*I won’t if you won’t*

Soon everything was taken care of, Heero had been moved to one of the medical room and Relena hadn’t leaved his side since, he hadn’t waken up yet but the doctors said that his condition was getting more stable every minute.

Duo’s walking towards and backwards the conference room with his two friends waiting for news.  His brain’s getting foggier every minute and he couldn’t stand it.  In the normal situation he would have talked non-stop to forget about everything, however all he wanted now was to be by Heero’s side.  But of course *his* Heero didn’t need him there, cause Relena was always by his side.

“Don’t worry, Duo.  I’m sure he would be fine. He always does.”  Trowa said calmly.

“And stop wandering around like that, you made us dizzy..”  Quatre chuckled. He just gets his smiled back after a long frustrated hour.

“I know, I just…”

His words stopped when suddenly Relena entered the room, she smiled a genuine smile to the three pilots.  “He’s awake.”

//Flashback//

“Would you stop that..!!”  Heero shouted from behind the desk.  Eyes still fixed to the computer screen.  Duo’s non-stop humming could be very distracted sometimes.

“Stop what? This?!” He hummed more loudly and combined it with a rough bounce over the bed.

“Duo..!!”

“Ow, c’mon, Heero.  Lighten up a little.  Why do you have to *find’* a mission when they’re not offering you one?”

“*That* is my mission.” He growled.

“Great…. Why can’t I have a normal partner, anyway.”  He sighed and then jumped from the bed, standing beside Heero and starting massaging the other boy in the shoulder.

“What are you doing?”  The Japanese boy turned his back to face the braided boy.  But Duo turned him back again to face the damned laptop.

“I’m trying to make you relax, so you can work better..” He answered--almost solemnly.

“Duo, you’re not trying to…”

“What?! Seduce you? Puhleeeze…” He chuckled. Somehow there’s a suspicious tone behind his words.

“Good, cause if you’re trying to distract me from my mission…”

“I know, I know, you will kill me…..”

“Hn.”

“But you know what, Hee-chan?”  He’s lowering his mouth to the other boy’s ear, “I didn’t remember you complain last night.”

Heero had to think hard for his next words. “I couldn’t find any mission last night.”

“Yeah, right.”  Duo giggled, “I like it better when there’s no mission.”

“Baka.”  Heero almost smiled.

Duo jumped for surprised. Did he just hear ‘the tone’?  The tone that Heero Yuy always uttered when he finally give up to his ol’ Maxwell charm?

“Okay, now, Heero. I’ll leave you for your mission now.”  Duo abandoned his unfinished job and started walking away towards the door.

“What?!”

“You said you’ll kill me if I ever distracted you from your mission, so I’m trying to save my head here..”  He smiled coyly teasing him.

“Damn it, Duo.”  He grasped the end of his partner’s braid.  Duo eeped and pulled back to Heero’s side.

“The mission can wait, I guess.” He snorted while twinning his arms around Duo’s waist.

Duo laughed in triumph. “Mission acknowledged.” He leaned to kiss his lover and turned off the laptop.

//End flashback//

“The doctor said that he recovers fast and his condition will be in complete shape in a week.”  Relena said to the other three pilots.  She had a tray in her hands, not letting any of the maids to bring the food for the Perfect Soldier.

They’re walking through the corridor heading to Heero’s room when Duo suddenly stopped.

“Duo, what’s wrong?” Quatre looked over his shoulder to see the Deathscythe pilot.

“Umm, sorry guys.  Seems I forget something with my tools in Shinigami.  I’d better take it before we self--destruct it later.”  He startled.

“We can do it later.”  Trowa muttered and did not stop walking.

“No, we can’t. That’s why I have to go now.”  Duo said nervously.

“But I thought you *really* want to see Heero…”  Quatre winced with disappointment.

Duo bit his bottom lip, eyes not exactly planted to the blue-eyed boy.  Quatre could read him like an open book; he smiled and then sighed.  “Okay, Duo.  You can see him later.  He’s okay, you know that…”

Duo nodded, didn’t know how to thank the Arabian pilot and then he ran to the exit door.

“What’s wrong with him? I thought he’s Heero’s friend.”  Relena blinked in surprise.

“I think that’s exactly why…”  Trowa gasped, eyes filled with tender when he remembered about their early waiting hours with Duo who never stop asking for Heero’s condition.

“Duo is afraid if he sees Heero now..”  Quatre smiled, “he might not be able to control himself.”

“They’re really close friends, didn’t they?” Relena smiled. “I never thought Heero could be friend with anyone before..”

Trowa faced the blonde pilot and he could see the Winner boy smiling to somewhere far away, “you have no idea, Relena-sama…”

//Flashback//

He turned towards the mirror and preened, straightening the collar of his black button down shirt when he felt gentle hands run through the strands of his hair.

“Be careful.”  A soft voice whispered in his ear.

“I’ll be fine, Heero.”  He smiled to their reflection in the mirror, “see, I didn’t forget to tell you this time.”

“Hn.”  He continued caressing Duo’s hair.  Smell the scent of the chestnut braid.

“Heero,” Duo turned around and pushed him a little.  His violet eyes full with determination when he finally said,

“I love you, Heero.”

Heero startled, moving backwards when he heard the statement.  Duo gulped, didn’t know what to do, He knew he shouldn’t have told him, a minute later he regret his action--especially after seeing Heero’s reaction.  But God knows that he could not *not* say it.  And if he had to die in this next mission, he wanted Heero to know how he really felt.

“I’m sorry, Heero.  Maybe I’m wrong to say those words now, but I have to say it, before it’s too late…”

“Noo…!!”  For his surprise Heero had pulled him back to his embrace and held him tightly. He closed his eyes and buried his face to Heero’s shoulder; trying to catch the smell of his lover.

“Admit it, Heero. We’re in the middle of a war here. We could’ve died anytime soon.  And before that I wanted to be with you, tell you how much I love you…”

“I know, but before the war is over and we’re still alive, promise me… Duo, you’ll always be here with me.”

Duo could feel him tremble in his shoulder, and he couldn’t stop himself for nodding. “I promise…”

He never heard the answer for his pledge that day.  Sometimes he thought he could hear it with his heart every time Heero touched him and kissed him, and Duo never stop saying ‘I love you’ when he get the chance, but sometimes he just longed to hear the words came from the mouth of Heero Yuy.

//End flashback//

He’s afraid.

He’s afraid if he saw Heero now he would jump straight over the stoic boy and cried.  He still couldn’t get the scene out of his mind, the scene of Heero and Relena together.

‘Don’t you think they’re so perfect together?’ A voice crackled in his mind.

“Yes”

‘And you think that he wouldn’t leave you one day for her?’

“No.”

‘Why? He didn’t love you.’

“Yes, he did.”

‘But he never say that, did he?’

He swallowed hard.  He had to admit that probably Heero Yuy never did in love with him, that he just a war pleasure after all for him.

It is time, he said to himself.  He had to say it. It is now or never.

He walked through that corridor once again, somehow it reminded him to the school hallway where he and Heero had their first mission together.

He stopped at Heero’s door and heard voices coming from inside, he cracked open the door and peeked.  He saw Relena sitting in a chair near the bed accompanying Heero who’s eating his dinner in the bed. The boys were gone, probably looking for him.

Heero was getting better now; he could see it in those intense eyes.

“The doctor said you’re going to be okay in a few days.” Duo could hear her said lovingly, her eyes straight to the Japanese boy.

“Aaa…” He kept shoveling his meal.

“Your friends seem pretty worried about you.”  She continued.

There’s a pause in his action--a slight pause--that only Duo could realize it.  “Hai.”

She waited until Heero drank his last water and his medication; she reached for the tray and lean to kiss him in the forehead.  He didn’t try to escape the kiss and somehow it made Duo’s heart wrench.

Relena had a red blushed on her cheek.  “Get well soon, Heero.”  She smiled.

“Hn.”

Duo closed the door silently, hid in one of the small dark alley nearby, and waited for Relena to depart; he waited long enough until he finally saw her pass his spot.  He gasped and tried to collect his nerve before he opened the door of Heero’s room.

He saw Heero standing in one side of the room, watching the stars from the nearest window and eyes wide opened when he saw his visitor.

“Hi.”  He mumbled when he finally have contact with Heero’s eyes.  “I’m glad you’re looking better..”

“Aa..”

“You should get some sleep now, Heero.  It’s been a hard day for you.”  He smiled.

“You too…”

“Well, not as bad as yours.”  He pointed at Heero’s wounds, “I’m sorry I didn’t come here sooner, it’s just that there’s something I have to do…”

Heero came closer to him and touched him in the stomach, Duo jerked away instantly from the touch.  “Does it still hurt, where I hit you?”

“No, no, I’m just shocked. I know you didn’t mean it, I mean.. you could’ve hit me harder than that….”  He gulped and then grinned.  “And actually I’m kinda hoping it will left some mark.”

“Baka.”

Duo laughed and flopped himself to the bed.

“So, Relena is very sweet ne?”  He smirked.

“What do you mean?”

“Well, she’s so nice to you, bringing you food and everything.”

“Yes, she is.”

“And we both know that she’s always have that feelings for you..” he chuckled, somehow it sounds bittersweet.

Duo bit his bottom lip again, “Everything’s over now..”

“Yes, it is.  Relena said the same thing.  I have promised that I wouldn’t kill anyone anymore…”

Silence filled the air of the room, only their breathing that matters.  And after an eternity, he finally said,

“Speaking about promise…” Duo started, “do you remembered the promise we’ve made long time ago?”

“We’ve made so much promises.”  Heero smiled to him, and Duo fell in love to him once again.

“We’ve promised before the war is over and we’re still alive, we’ll always be together..”

“Aa…”

“The war is over now, and you can--, I mean we can…”

“Aa…”

He swallowed hard, waiting for Heero’s reaction.

“I love you, Heero.  But you’ve never told me how you felt, don’t you think it is time?”

“Duo..”  His eyes showed somewhat really close to the word fear.

Duo rose from the bed and smiled.

“It’s okay, Heero.  If you can’t say it, maybe it’s because you’ve never did felt that way.  But it’s okay, I’m okay with that…”

“Duo…”  His mouth opened and closed. Duo smiled. ‘at least he didn’t say sorry’, he said to himself.

He had a brilliant smile in his face that matches the star in the sky itself. “So this is goodbye then…”

“What?”  Heero’s eyes wide open.

“Yes, Heero.  Goodbye.  The war is over, I fulfilled my promised and now I’m going to leave you..”

“Du..”  He couldn’t finish the word as Duo’s lips seized his with a very sweet and tender kiss.  He cupped his face in both hands and Heero savored the kiss to the last pleasure it gave him.

“Goodbye, Heero Yuy.”

“Duo.”

“I love you…” Duo released his hands and started moving towards the door.

Heero wished he had the reason to stop him. ‘Duo, I….’ But no words came out his mouth.

“Good luck…  and goodbye.”

And the door closed.

*I love you, Heero.*
