Chapter Eight: "I didn't order a pizza"

With a slam of his car door, AJ stood on Nick’s parent’s driveway, gazing up at their huge house. Instinctively he pulled a cigarette from the packet in his pocket.

“Oh you dick!” he muttered to himself, “like I have time!” He pushed the cigarette back into its box and began to walk up the driveway.

“Oi! AJ – what’s a nice guy like you doing in a place like this, eh?!”

AJ tilted his backwards and, shading his eyes from the sun, looked to the upper windows of the house. Nick’s younger sister BJ was hanging out of her bedroom window, grinning wildly at him.

“Are you looking for trouble, or would you rather I waited until tomorrow?!” she giggled, squinting her eyes in the dying sun.

AJ smiled. “Oh, I’m positively looking for trouble,” he flirted.

Really?” she teased. “Yeah, well, trouble’s busy right now, but I’ll call around for you later!”

“If only you would babe, if only you would,” AJ grinned. “But, speaking of trouble…is Nick in?”

BJ raised an eyebrow. “Yep, but sort of not though. I mean, it’s a case of – lights are on but no one’s home!” Her smile vanished. “He’s in a foul mood. I wouldn’t recommend a visitation until the dark fog above our house has cleared.”

AJ nodded. Then shook his head, saying, “Yeah, but I need to talk to him…it’s kinda important, B.”

She looked hard at him. “So…you’re suggesting I come downstairs from my bedroom and open the front door so you can come in?” Her eyes glinted.

He nodded dumbly. “Err…if you wouldn’t mind.”

“Okay,” she replied, disappearing gradually behind the windowsill. “Give me two seconds – I’m naked.” She watched AJ’s mouth drop open. “Hee hee.”

And with one final insane laugh, she vanished from view. AJ waited patiently on the drive willing himself that, right now, – considering BJ was Nick’s sister, and that Nick was having the mother of all problems – he really shouldn’t be thinking about her. I mean, she was, like, seventeen anyway. Much too young.

He heard the front door opening and twirled around, facing BJ on her porch.

“Awww you’re fully clothed,” he said pouting his bottom lip.

“For now, yep.” She smiled and motioned for him to come in. He did so, following BJ into the hallway. She walked to the bottom of the stairs yelling:

“NIIIIIIIIIIIIICCCCCCCK!” She paused. “OI! NIIIIIICK.” She paused again. “Nick! Your pizza has arrived.”

From upstairs there came a muffled reply, “I didn’t order a pizza.”

“Yeah, I know that,” replied BJ, “But come down anyway will you dear?!”

AJ laughed and looked confusedly at BJ. “Excuse me, did you just call Nick…um… dear?”

Straight-faced, she turned to him. “Yeah, I’ve discovered he responds to that one.”

AJ coughed. “Um, rather him than me.”

“Whatever you say DEAR!” she commented, flouncing out of the hallway and into the kitchen.

AJ stood a while at the bottom of the stairs, listening for footsteps but there was nothing. So, he made his way up the stairs anyway, heading to Nick’s room.

He knocked twice. No answer. He knocked again. No answer. He knocked again –

“What do you want BJ?”

“It’s AJ actually.”

Pause.

“Well, what the hell do you want?”

“I’d like to talk actually,” AJ replied, “because I ain’t going away.”

“Fine stay there.”

AJ sighed. “Yo, Nick don’t be a brat. Please can I come in?”

“No.”

“Fine, I’ll let myself in,” remarked AJ, opening the door and walking into Nick’s bedroom.” He stood there, staring at Nick who was lying on his bed. “Hi.”

“Hi,” said Nick bitterly, as he turned onto his stomach. “I don’t mean to be rude, but, like, can you go now…please?”

AJ sat down on a beanbag. “You don’t know what I’m here for yet.”

Nick looked at AJ, rolling his eyes. “Well I have a pretty good idea.”

AJ paused. “So tell me your ideas,” he prompted, lighting a cigarette.

“Look AJ – I can’t be fucked with your mind games, or your poor attempts at psycho fucking analysis or whatever they call it. I want to be left alone, if you get my point.”

AJ didn’t bat an eyelid. Nick sat up angrily.

“Okay, fine, I’ll spell it out for you. Get – the – fuck – out – of – my – bedroom.”

But AJ merely shook his head and flicked a loose bit of ash into an empty coke can.
